    Standley Gorge

My wife and I have just got back from 17 days in Australia. The absolute highlight was our time in the “Red Centre” – places such as Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kings Canyon, Alice Springs. September is the perfect month for this. This picture I took at the Stanley Gorge. Settings – f6.3; 44mms; ISO100; 1/25sec.

I tried a similar shot in the Valley of Fire in Nevada. This is far better than my effort.

Consider a crop to reduce the amount of bright rock on the left. No need to remove it all, just enough to reduce the viewers eye being pulled to the bright area. I feel the background through the cleft needs to dominate.

What Trevor said. Selectively reducing the highlights at left and/or adding a bit of vignette might also help. Nicely seen opportunity. A bit of processing might improve it significantly.

Nice scene, Jim but as others have mentioned the light needs to be tamed.
