    Mrs Meers

For some reason, this Peacock reminded me of the character Mrs Meers played by Beartrice Lillie in the film Thoroughly Modern Millie. Perhaps senility is setting in.

I have no idea who you're talking about but it's a cool photo.

If you know the film, she was the oriental looking lady, villain of the piece that ran the women's home. I think that it's because of the stern look and because the comb on the top of the birds head resembles the hair pins sticking out from the hair bun on the film characters head - a somewhat stereotype parody of an older 1920's oriental female.

Have a look at this short clip:

Love this one, especially with the two flanking chicks giving the central figure even more prominence. And the Mrs. Meers comparison is spot on.

Just to be anal about it , it's actually a Peahen! The female is much less colourful than the Peacock, which has that massive fan tail. It is a really nice shot of both the mother and chicks IMHO!!
And yes... I see the resemblance to the film character - good connection!!!

Marvellous observation, John. my memories that far back are hazy (have I a problem?), but I do remember that formidable woman vaguely and with some anxiety!

Thanks all for the responses. I don't what dredges the comparison up in my mind. It must be years since I saw the film, even as a repeat on the television.

It certainly has a haughty bearing. I think it could represent many matronly characters. The Importance of Being Earnest first came to my mind.
