The border that divided Europe if not the whole world. Most of the "Innergerman Border" was tore down, but a very few pieces were kept for memorization.

That is an fascinating record of our recent history. I thought all of it had been pulled down and that none was left standing. I remember travelling by train from Gdansk to Berlin and then to Paris in 1992 and there were some watchtowers still standing at the fromer border.

I know that we often feel that we want to destroy these monstrosities that shaped the second half of the 20th century. But I hope something like this will be preserved as a historical record for future generations.

Hi Donald,

you should visit one of these cold war relicts when you take another trip to Germany. There a a few minor museums spread across the former innergerman border, but they are hard to find if you do not know where to look. Some of them have their own websites so google can help. A major installation was "Observation Post Alpha". It is located directly behind the former boarder and used to be a sentry post for NATO. It was one of the hotspots in central europe during the Cold War time. NATO supposed that Warsaw Pact armies would start their major assault in this area due to its geographic location, called Fulda Gap. Today you can visit the former german border and the sentry post there. The next major city is Fulda.

Very interesting Robert.
A couple of years ago I drove from the Hook of Holland to Poland and was quite taken aback to see all the watch towers and other relics along the old border between West and East Germany. It was quite a sobering sight.
