Desaturated sky

I really did not like the sky in this image. Too pale blue and bright. I tried a number of ways to correct it, nothing seemed to work. Then I 100% desaturated the blues in the sky. Quite happy with the result, however as always I am open to opinions and comments



Original, or at least before removing the blue in the sky. The SOOC was shot about a half hour before sunrise, so this is still quite processed

your desaturated sky seems to fit with the cabin. Good choice in my opinion.

The desaturated sky works better for me. You have a scene that is predominantly warm tones, other than the sky, so a more neutral colour seems to fit the mood a bit better. I wonder what warming up the sky a touch would do for the composition?

Tried that, may be my ineptitude or Capture One's inability to select clear sky and not the clouds, it ended up a strange purple and not realistic at all. Maybe I could pass it off as artistic?-

The desaturated sky gives it a mood and atmosphere completely missing in 'work-in-progress' copy. Well done for thinking of that.

C1 is rather limited in what you can do. I was thinking along these lines.

The desaturated sky gives the impression of "a storm is a brewing" or "a storm just passed by", whereas the original sky kind of is just blah to me.

Blah indeed. The image was heading for the file and forget folder. Was just fortuitous chance I elected to do something that was a bit of a stretch for me.

Nicely captured and processed, I like the warm treatment of the cabin and it sort of balances the grayness of the sky although I still think the clouds are very dramatic.

Seems there are many ways to deal with sky and they are interesting, but I'm more inclined to like the regular ole' blue sky in your original.

The problem with the blue sky, at least for me, is it tends to dominate the image due to the brightness relative to the rest of the image. Did try darkening the lighter bit, was never happy with it.

This is why it is great to post here. Never in a million years would I have come up with this version; grist for the creative mill.

With winter coming, the "end of the world" feeling might be appropriate for this scene. Let's see what kind of shape the structure is in when spring rolls around...

As for trying ideas; that's where I head to the colour wheel to see what works. In this case, I sampled one of the colours near the structure and changed the saturation and luminosity of what was already in the shot. I find that often works well.

Tried an alternative of making that nice sky the subject, as opposed to the barn:



Drastic color-toning sliders action in RawTherapee plus blue curve lowered at the high end (blues were blown in the original).

Likely too much for most us but you get the idea ...

Thanks Ted. Going radical is an exercise I need to do more frequently. I am too conservative in most of my processing and breaking the mold ( or mould in my case) is a good idea.

Often the case on this forum. Desaturated sky for me but then Manfred's tweak adds the finish. Surprising how you can turn the ordinary into something special with some imagination.
