The Pocket Rocket

The engine No. 76079 is the BR Standard Class 4MT that is a regular on the North Yorkshire Moors (Tourist) Railway. Caught it just leaving Whitby for one of it's regular runs. It is apparently quite powerful for its size and when first in mainline service, became a jack of all trades as a result - hence it was dubbed "The Pocket Rocket"

Nice shot, John. This scene reminds very much of the "scenic" jigsaw puzzles we used to do as kids, and hunting through the pile of pieces trying to find the driver's head.

Slightly off topic... Microsoft has a jigsaw puzzle app that lets you turn your picture into a 600 piece puzzle. Which menas you can take a few hours putting together one of your shots and seeing where things were good bad and ugly.

This is a superb image, in my opinion, as you have a fantastic location at track level, a dynamic angle and perpective, three complete carriages, wonderful billowing steam and a driver and passenger leanng out. It doesn't get much better than that!

Another well captured and well processed image. The only thing I don't like about the image is that big stop sign sitting out front. It is a major distraction.

Thanks all for the comments. The stop was in and out throughout the PP process. In the end, I decided that it was part of the furniture and story. The train was stopped and I was waiting for it to move and produce smoke but I waved to the driver who gave me a nice burst of steam anyway.

I tend to agonize about what stays and what goes in these types of shots as well. When it comes to something like this, especially when dealing with material that is not the subject, I tend to remove if it is a significant distraction. The way I make my decision is often based on the thought of if I could have removed this object physically, if this were possible of course, before taking the shot, I would also remove it in PP.

I really enjoy this image. It reminds me of a simpler time. I think I was born about 30-40 years too late, Steam Trains, Johnny Cash, John Wayne.

Thanks Peter. No, I was just inside a crossing gate where of course I shouldn't have been but there were several tracks between where I was and the line that is in use. I waved at the driver really as an acknowledgement because when he looked at me I thought it was in rebuke but he obviously recognised that a burst of steam would be welcomed by a photog.
