    Powerful Beauty ?

    Powerful Beauty ?

Every culture has it’s stereotypes. The west believes that men are strong and that women are weak. Guns are strong and flowers are weak are two more stereotypes.

I haven’t believed those stereotypes for a very long time. So here’s a powerful flower shot for all the powerful women that are out there.

Be careful with stereotypes. A lot of phallus symbols in your gift for all the powerful women.
    But a nice picture.

    Brian,

A good capture of a beautiful flower, but the image as a whole leads me to a suggestion that I hope you find helpful rather than offensive.

Placing something interesting somewhere in that rectangle isn't enough to make a good composition. To make it a powerful composition, you have to do something with all of what surrounds the flower. In this case, the very busy, well lit, and high-contrast background draws attention away from the flower. There aren't lines leading to flower; there isn't a blurred or dark background that would isolate the flower and throw attention on it; and the flower is just roughly centered.

I take quite a lot of flower images, and I often can't get a decent composition when I take them in the garden for the same reason this image doesn't work for me: a busy background that is too close to the flower to throw out of focus. Sometimes, one can get into a position where there is enough distance, or there is enough space that I can interpose something that can serve as a background. In this case, however, that seems impossible. Perhaps some elaborate PP could reduce this issue in this shot.
