    Knife Edge

    I thought I would try to shoot a 25 cm / 10 in chef's knife on edge.

    When viewed in Lightbox, the thickness of the knife blade can just be made out. To get this shot, I suspended the knife from an arm with a bit of electrical tape that I selected and cloned out.

    Interesting shot. In FastStone Viewer, the blade projects 5 px wide; what is the shadow artefact each side of the blade?

    I had made the visual assumption that we are looking at the 'sharp' edge of the blade and the shadow was the area between front and rear. Unless it's a very thin knife?

    The "shadow" is the taper from the cutting edge to the spine of the knife. Thickness varies from about 4mm near the bolster to around 0.5mm toward the tip. The thin black line is the cutting edge, which is what I focused the camera on. This side view of the knife is:

    Well captured. I think this image would work better if you removed the handle. If it were mine I would crop down to about the middle of the silver part of the handle, enough to remove the bit of shadow on it. Then it would be pleasing minimalist shot.

    Intriguing suggestion. It works. Perhaps a bit too simple?
