    Another Viola

No 'new arrivals' as off yet, so I sticked with a New-Old-Subject, a wild Viola flower, this time with a 'little' bonus
Lately I have been experimenting with borders around my images. What do you think about this one and about borders in general (for display on the internet..).

    Canon 7DII, microscoopobjectif on bellows,
    magnification 3,7x
    91 frames stacked with Zerene

    Another Viola

    C&C most welcome

    Happy Holidays.

I like the image. I think you have controlled the highlights well and there is plenty of detail in the image, and it is well positioned in the frame.

Frames? In general I don't like them.

I am in the minority. I like frames, even frames that look like old style picture frames.

Frames do work as long as they compliment the image without distracting from it. They are very much like the mattes we use when we frame a print. The provide a visual boundary to the image and keep the viewer focused on the image itself. While complementary colours are sometimes used in framing, they tend to be fairly thin with the main matte is usually white or off-white. The matte tends to be quite substantial; often in the order of 50mm to 75mm (2 to 3 inches) on most medium sized prints. Picture frames themselves tend to be narrow and neutral coloured for photographs. A hard lesson many fine art photographers have learned is that a matte that is too small actually detracts from the image. Too much matte is usually better than too little.

Therein lies the rub for images that we display on the internet. The pictures tend to be quite small, especially when displayed on a smart phone, tablet or laptops. The amount of image that would make an image look good means that space has to be dedicated to the frame, so the image itself becomes smaller. That tends to not be a good thing as there is limited space for the actual image.

Most people would find the frame on this image to be too small and that takes away from your work. Let me demonstrate what I am suggesting.

    1. No frame

    2. Large frame that is off-white

    3. Your original frame

Hi Rudi - the detail of the Viola is outstanding! I can't comment about framing. I know absolutely nothing about how to best display pictures - yet.

Very intriguing shot! However, I agree with what's been said before about the frame. I often find they distract me too much from the photo, which is a shame for sure. I prefer the one shared by Manfred without the frame, it feels more comfortable to me. Loving the amount of detail visible in this shot though. It's outstanding for sure.

    Thanks all for the comments.

When printing and framing my own pictures, I usually use a big white border/Matt. And those pictures do stand out more than on display. (Off course things like size, a real print in hand … do play a role also). So why not putting a border around images on the internet....

he worded almost exactly my own experience....So I tried different smaller borders, and couldn't really decide iff its a bonus or a distraction......future will tell....

An impressive stack. But why Viola? It looks like some kind of Orchid to me.
