    Project 52 Challenge 2019

As most people will be aware, this personal challenge has occurred, once again, during 2018 and hopefully some people will be willing to continue in the coming year (2019). Maybe some new members would like to have a go this time.

If so, all the details are here:

2018 Project 52 - Guidelines, FAQ and Index

Remember, it is a personal challenge not a competition so you can vary your input as required and even start late or drop out part way through as personal circumstances change.

So, how many people will be brave enough to have a go in 2019?

I am in again and encourage others to use it as impetus to continue to learn and grow!

I may join in as it will force me to go out regularly and take some photographs. There has been too much reading and not enough practice in 2018!

I shall need an objective or some structure to what I do but also some variety, so I am thinking of concentrating my efforts differently in each of the 4 quarters.

Glad to have company in 2019. Will look forward to seeing what you choose to explore!

Hi Geoff - I am game to try again to post images for comments and suggestions during a P52 project in 2019. I am going to work a bit more on post processing - perhaps showing the before and after image, steps involved, etc. I don't know if I'll stick to any theme but what I do know is that if I don't push myself to hunt for photo opportunities, I'll not work at the improvement.

So yes, I'll set up another thread soon and get back to it.

Thank you to everyone who supported my 2018 efforts. I look forward to any and all suggestions on 2019's work! Happy New Year!

I won't be participating in '19. The stimulus to get out and try things was fun but the every week part was not. I will keep checking in with what others are posting in P52-19 though, and look forward to following your journey. All the best to you (and all the CIC community) for the coming year.

Hi Bill - I'll watch for your posts when you get the chance to participate in the CiC forum! Your work is always interesting and your comments help add to the discussions that are occurring! I'm not sure how regular I'll be with my image taking ideas. So I'll have to see how it goes for me this coming year.

Enjoy this new year. It is always interesting to see what will happen next.......

Just to throw a bit of a twist on the theme. Petapixel has published a 52-week photo challenge with a very specific concept for every week. A bit of guidance and regular shooting would put a bit more structure around this type of challenge.

That Petapixel idea is getting into competition territory and we have tried that sort of thing before with little response. As it is now, only a few members are prepared to take on our current challenge and some always drop out part way through the year.

For me, our 'loose fitting' Project 52 gives the freedom for individual photographers to do their own thing, but share their successes or failures with other members on a regular basis.

Photography is freedom to do what I want and when I want to do it; subject to weather and other natural restraints. So because retirement has mostly set me free I wouldn't return to a closely structured form of restraint. I left school a long time ago and have no wish to return to that sort of close discipline. Maybe that is why I was self employed for most of my working life.

Many CinC members seem to be in a position of having to balance their happy hobby with work and family commitments etc so I doubt they would relish being told what type of scenes to photograph when they manage to find a few hours of personal freedom. But if anyone wants to give it a go there is no reason why they can't adapt those Petapixel rules to their personal Project 52 Challenge on CinC.

    Re: Project 52 Challenge 2019

A few years ago I tried an informal version of a project 52, but I only shot 1 photo. I didn’t really have a plan and I found it challenging to find subjects to photograph. At the start of the year I bought a macro filter to see if macro photography would be something for me, but because of circumstances I didn’t have the chance and the mind to use it or make a lot photo’s (other than of my daughter who will turn one in a few days).
So in 2019 I want to use my macro filter for a project 52, with flowers as the main subject. So count me in. (this is also a chance to get more involved with CiC )

Regardles the direction to be chosen for this site, I think the Petapixel theme list may serve as an inspiration for some of us.

In 2015, David, I chose a botanical subjects theme for my Project 52 and took at least one image per week from the same site to give a year round view of what was growing there. Easy enough during the summer but I was struggling during January and February. It certainly improved my skills in this 'field' and made me really think about the variety of possible subjects including mosses, fungi and seedheads as well as flowers. My plant identification knowledge also received a substantial boost.

Here is the result of my efforts which may give you a few ideas.

Botanical subject matter seems like a fruitful challenge, always a flower somewhere and if weather conditions are dull you can always visit a greenhouse.

Geoff - I fully understand. What I have found with people is that they have trouble getting out and shooting without a specific goal in mind, hence the Petapixel view might give people something to think about. They may not wish to follow it, but there may be some concepts that they might want to explore. Part of what the folks at PetaPixel have done is that they have selected topics that are going to get people out of their comfort zones and that is definitely one great way to improve one's photographic skills. In my view that is every bit as important as shooting regularly.

I generally shoot several times a week, so do not feel the need to use something like the Project 52 to challenge me to get out and get some images. I've been approached by members of one of the photo clubs that I belong to to join their bi-weekly winter shooting challenge and I expect I will be turning them down as I'm going to be away for about 1/3 of the period in question, although I might submit a few shots as some of the topics are interesting.

I definitely have a few small projects of my own that are underway right now and those images will show up here if they look like they might be worth posting.

That very nicely captures why I will not be repeating P52 this year.

Hi Geoff - well stated! I've put my first post for 2019 P52 up but I make no promises about consistency. This is a new year to do as I want in regard to projects. I like being a part of CiC and having the P52 going adds to the participation of this site for me. If I didn't have a reason for posting, I might drift away to other sites and I really don't want to do that. The moderators keep this place reasonably clean and decent and that is another key reason I come here. Also, the members are more familiar to me now so it is enjoyable to see what photo work or comments someone might make. P52 work or hobby is whatever a person wants to make of it, in my opinion. In my case, it is a hobby that I hope to be able to enjoy for a few years yet.
