The single car with its brake lights and tail lights on draw the viewer into the scene and past the larger parked are in the foreground. The care that is pulling out from the side blocks the viewer from looking down the sidewalk and pulling the eyes away from the main scene.

Hi John - RE; K-9. If I used a slow speed as you have, my image would be blurred. Is this a difference in camera types or how do you accomplish no blurring? BTW, I would not want this fellow coming after me! YIKES! Good image indeed!

Hi Sandy,

It's mainly my position to the K-9, he is coming almost directly towards me so the movement is more easily frozen within one frame as opposed to capturing the movement parallel to my position, I don't have to pan to keep up with the dog's movement so there is less chance for camera shake/subject movement blur. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Sandy,

If you do, try a few different shutter speeds such as 1/250sec and have the kids run parallel to your position (try at both 5 feet and 10 feet from your position) and then have them run towards and away from you at the same shutter speed, later compare how well you can freeze their movement. Repeat at slower and faster shutter speeds, I would also practice anticipating and focusing on a spot where you expect them to reach and also panning with their movement, have fun.

Don't want to suggest a harmful environment but some running in the rain would make for some cool shots, or better yet puddle jumping. :)

Both ideas sound like fun. One problem though - how to keep the camera equipment dry? I usually avoid taking photos in the rain. :)

If you can't steady an umbrella this item will do, the plastic window can get hazy though.

Hi John - most of the time, it is too windy to fiddle with an umbrella. I like the look of this one and for the price, it is worth trying. There have been times when I would have been out but rain has been a hindrance. Thanks! :)

Sandy - while there are commercial rain covers available for cameras, a much less expensive solution is to use a plastic grocery bag (cut a hole in the bottom to let the lens stick out) or if you are traveling and staying at a hotel, grab one of the shower caps often found in hotel rooms, they make fine rain covers too.

If you find you enjoy shooting in the rain, consider a proper commercial rain cover for your camera. I own several of these and they are not particularly expensive.

The image shows one I used for three days while shooting Holi in India a couple of years ago. I taped the opening to my lens hood (using gaffers tape) and my arms were in the two sleeves to hold and manage the camera's controls. I also have a simpler StormJacket that works in more moderate wet conditions.

Hi Manfred - I like the rain cap suggestion for innovation! I have ordered the rain cover that John pointed to and am waiting on its arrival. It should be another "interesting experience"! I do remember your trip to Holi and especially your avatar with the colors on your face! I hope you have that one printed and out for people to see! <grin>
