Interesting. I don't think I had ever seen what I assume is the male plumage. Here's a snapshot of a nesting female on a small island off the north shore of Iceland:

Dan, I recall seeing a television programme not long ago set in Iceland. Most eiderdown comes from there but it is, and always will be, a cottage industry. Apparently, Eider ducks will not breed in captivity and so they are merely encouraged to stay and breed on the Icelandic hillsides where they are found and at the appropriate time of year. the local farmers go out in family groups and collect the down from the nests. Which is why I guess, pure eiderdown goods are so expensive.
