Flickr - Changes and possible loss of images

This is for Flickr users only.

I keep getting e-mails reminding me that the Account structure of Flickr is changing. I have had a free PRO account since back in the days of British Telecom and Yahoo, but that is now going to be no more.

I will not be paying for a service, given that the only reason I use Flickr is as a host for this forum. I can use a hidden page my own website for that purpose.

So, I don't know if and when my Flickr account will be cancelled and, therefore, all the images I've ever posted on here will disappear.

So, this message has two purposes. 1)To let you know that my images may disappear on this fora and 2) to remind fellow Flickr users of the need to be ready for the changes.

    Hi Donald,

I thought they were going to limit it to 1000 images or are they simply erasing the slate and letting members start over again. Right now I'm under the 1000 image limit, if that is in fact the rule, and can probably trim some of those images as some were just test posts.

I edited the post, the free plan states 1000 images.

Yes indeed, the 1000 free images is in place. What I don't know is whether a PRO account is converted to a free account if there is no payment made and, if it is and the subscriber has more than 1000 images on Flickr, who decides which images will be deleted.

$50 a year is a heckuva deal though if you have 1000's stored there.

It says: Photos are now displayed at 5K resolution for any screen.

Does that mean that all uploaded images will now be re-sampled to that size? (I don't use Flickr, so please pardon my ignorance) ...

No idea. I have an existing Flickr Pro account and can upload and download again an image at 7360x4912 ...36MP

I do not have a problem with hosting sites charging for their product. I like Flickr , it is easy to use. Perhaps it is cheaper for those who host their own websites to do as Donald is envisaging and host their own images. The web is out of it's honeymoon period now, and a bit like photo editing software (thinking Adobe etc), it needs to pay its way. We all have a choice whether to use these sites or not. But it is unrealistic to expect a web hoster to provide a service for free.

We have all seen the effects of social media sites being attacked for selling our data, and rightly so. They have to recoup the revenue from somewhere ? The old adage that "there is no such thing as a free lunch" is as true now as it ever was.

Hopefully they'll let you tag the ones you aren't concerned about, I know I can delete an image I don't want but like you said if its linked to a forum then its gone there too.

I may be wrong but...I'm sure that I read somewhere that they will delete images based one date uploaded, i.e. earliest uploaded will be delete until the stored image count is below 1000

A bit unfair but if earliest upload was 5-10 years ago perhaps it won't affect any image posted in a forum as I believe some that get directly uploaded get lost after a few years anyway.

That was in an email that Flickr sent me, so I would expect this will be what happens.

TinyPic removes images that are inactive as well, so to a large extent this is already happening on this site. For the most part, I suspect that most people only look at reasonably recent posts, so a limit of 1000 images would not matter to me one way or other.

    From the flickr email:

"Free members with more than 1,000 photos or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Flickr Pro or download content over the limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted—starting from oldest to newest date uploaded—to meet the new limit."

I upgraded to the Pro account. For my use (sharing, access to images when away from home, and what may be described as a mini-backup*), it is excellent value for money.

    * A set of albums containing key images, independent of my local storage devices.
