    The Falls

I have not been able to get out to take pictures for some time now, and don't know how frequent I will be able to get out in the near future. I did get out today however and was able to visit Niagara falls! The day was cold and overcast but I was happy to get out and capture this shot.

Very nice. Our big treat growing up was a trip to Niagara Falls. The view is a lot better from the Canadian side.

Thanks Paul . I must admit I have only once crossed the border to view the falls from the US side; I should make another trip for completeness. I should also plan to make a panaroma shot....

    Re: The Falls

If you get a chance to shoot later in the winter when the ice has accumulated on the falls it might be worthwhile to plan a return trip; if I remember correctly, you live around an hour away. The photography of the surrounding area that has ice accretion on it makes for interesting images too, not just the falls themselves.

I find the Horseshoe Falls to be hard to photograph because of all the spray and mist in the air and that seems to get worse as the air temperature drops.

I found Sunday mornings were good in the winter because very few people show up. Lots of parking near the falls too so you don't have to haul your gear too far. The one word of warning, based on personal experience is that it is all too easy to get frostbite. I was only out for about 45 minutes and thought I had dressed properly, but my nose got a very nasty bit of frostbit that took weeks to clear up.

These shots were taken about 4 years ago, mid-February 2015. It was a particularly cold winter. I don't get down to Southern Ontario too often in the winter, but we were in Toronto for some reason or other and decided to spend the night in the St Catharines / Niagara Falls area because we hadn't seen the Falls are in the winter for quite a few years.

Thanks for sharing these shots Manfred. Its worth the trip to the falls; not withstanding the frost bite! I think your trip in 2015 might have coincided with the freezing over of Lake Erie, which gives some indication of how cold that winter was!
I enjoyed all your shots but my favorite composition was that of the Trees and Sjylon Tower.
With all the snow and freezing weather I think a return trip is imminent!
