I use the Yongnuo 622 system with my Canon, cost about the price of a single PW to get 8 622 transceivers and the transmitter control. Less than £140 from memory. The units can be used as remote camera triggers as well, even works with canon M which had most remote functions disabled.

True and there are a lot of other proprietary solutions out on the market that give functionality that use more modern and less expensive technology.

That being said, Pocket Wizards are the closest thing to being a "universal" solution on the market, albeit at a price. With my PocketWizards I can control lights from Nikon, Paul C Buff, Profoto, Bowens, Dyna-Lite, Norman, Elinchrom and Photogenic. Canon and Panasonic shooters can do the same and that's just with "Smart Triggers". I can also fire of lights from my Sekonic flash meter, which is absolutely invaluable when setting up a multiple light setup. Add the standard "dumb" trigger and you can add just about any light on the market into the mix. I have used Nikon Speedlights, Paul C Buff Einstein and Photogenic lights into a single shoot.

So yes, there are cheaper solutions out there and for most people on this site, that is probably going to be a better solution, but for more advanced photographers Pocket Wizards are a far more inviting feature.

I do have a single Godox Witstro AD 360 and use its proprietary triggering system when I need a larger portable light. I can and do mix it with my Pocket Wizards from time to time, but have to do so using a manual trigger.
