Sometimes the first frame you select from a batch isn't the best. I processed this and thought that I actually liked it more than the first one. A bit of noise reduction needed here due to the heavier crop and I've also applied 0.5 of Gaussian Blur because the other images look a bit brittle.

John - I do like using a sepia tone for "period" images, but I'm not sure I like it as much as pure B&W in this case. Snow is white rather than yellow.

The image is a good composition and I like both colour and mono, although for me the mono does seem more appropriate for the subject matter. In converting to mono I would have tried using a red digital filter on the top third of the image to darken the sky, in order to give a better separation of the sky from the exhaust cloud of the locomotive.

Thanks Philip. I did apply a filter, albeit a grad ND, to the sky. It's less apparent in Manfred B/W version than the sepia. I guess I could have darkened the sky further in conversion by cutting the blue channel a little but ..................

Nice image, John. Of your two, I prefer the colour version because the sepia looks a bit flat to me. It seems you might have lifted the shadows there.
