I still wonder what you mean with "When preparing a reply to a question about resizing".
I simply mean that I encountered this problem while preparing a reply to a question someone else posted about resizing. This is not really relevant to the issue we are discussing, so if you don't understand it, ignore it.

I don't see what you see on your pc, let that be clear.
I understand that. However, if you read the other postings, you will see that some people do, and other people don't. That's the puzzle. Moreover, I just posted a screenshot that shows exactly what I see. In addition, before posting my first post, I tried three different sizes of linked images, and I obtained exactly the same results in each case.
If you have some possible explanation for why this phenomenon sometimes appears and sometimes doesn't, that would be helpful. However, it isn't productive for us to debate whether the phenomenon exists, when I have both described it and shown it concretely with a screen shot.

I'll finish the quote
Quote:
When preparing a reply to a question about resizing, I noticed for the first time (!) a distortion of aspect ratios in images posted here by linking from Smugmug.
This tells me you are busy and that will probably in the editor. Further you saw a picture you linked to so that can only be a preview. I don't care, just to be sure we're discussing the same subject.

I often don't see what others see, and sometimes the other way. That's no argument. I bet that if those people are standing next to you and you point them on the issue the'll see it too.
That's why I mention the image sizes. Just figures.

As I explained, I experimented with different images sizes, and this had no effect whatsoever. Image size is not relevant to the phenomenon we are discussing, which is a matter of aspect ratio, not size.

Re the first sentence: as I just explained, this has NOTHING TO DO with the phenomenon under discussion. I was simply explaining the context in which I found it. I did this only because people often resize to post here. As I already suggested, you should ignore this, since it seems to be distracting you from the actual issue.
Re the second sentence: I don't understand what you mean. I explained what I did, and it did not entail using any editor and had nothing to do with preview files. This is something that has to do with how CiC sometime displays linked images. Nothing else is relevant to the discussion.
I have a flickr account, so when I have time, I may try to replicate this by first posting the original issues there, rather than to smugmug, and then linking to them here.

If it would be of any help, I can put an image up on my website same size as yours - and then check it's aspect ratio in CiC. I could also provide a link to the on-line original.
Like yourself, I find it quite disappointing when a website alters my images in any way. eBay was no fun when I first started selling watches and it still pays to post at 1:1, far as I can tell ...

I think that would be an interesting thing to try. If you would like, I can provide you with the images with which I started, although I can't do that right now.

OK, I'm busy too, right now. Are they JPEGs?
Re: distortions in images posted here
yes, nearly full size (quality 90) from Lightroom. I'll have to look, but I think they are in the vicinity of 3 MB each. I can also make smaller ones if you would like.

No, 3MB is OK Dan, shouldn't make a difference anyway ...
Re: distortions in images posted here
I still don't seem to be understanding the problem. The first two images are 600x389 and 600x450 so, in CiC on my PC using the Opera web browser, the second looks taller than the first. In the screen shot in Post #19 the second image looks taller than the first. To clarify this, here is a crop of a screen shot showing two identical copies of your screen shot (at 100%) in which the tops of the two images are aligned. It shows that, in your screen shot, the second image appears taller than the first, as it should be.

Re: distortions in images posted here
Phillip,
The problem is that they display correctly (different aspect ratios) on some computers, like yours, but not on others. See my screenshot above.

Here is a screenshot of the two images on CiC:

Don't look for subtle differences; the two images are dramatically different before posting to CiC.
I tried taking screen shots of the originals, uploading them to Smugmug, and posting, but the same problem arises.
Dan, maybe I am misunderstanding you, but in this screenshot the two pictures are different. The second is taller.
Re: distortions in images posted here
Apologies to everyone. Philip had the key. The images are displaying correctly. I apologize for sending everyone on a wild goose chase.
The problem was simply that given the particular image, comparing the images one on top of the other made it hard (for me, at least) to see the transformation. So, I tried something akin to what Philip did. I took a screen shot of each of the images at the top of this thread, as they appear in the thread. I loaded both into Irfanview, aligned the the Irfanview windows side by side and took a screen shot of that. Voila:
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-.../i-B47M4nV.jpg
the dimensions are hard to see in the screen shot, but they too are correct.
Again, apologies to everyone. And thanks for clearing this up for me.

Listening/reading isn't your strongest feature:(.
See post 5,16,20,22.
A simple right click->image info would have given you the right results. But you just kept on refusing.
Apologies accepted:)

No, George, I didn't refuse. Look at post 17:
Quote:
Look at the information from the two photos that you obtain by right-clicking. The first is 600 x 389. The second is 600 x 450. Yet on my monitor and that of a number of other posters, they appear identical
That is, I DID right click, but my perception of the images was incorrect--inconsistent with those data. That was the whole point of my positing. The answer is that I couldn't accurately perceive the difference in aspect ratio in this pair of images (as opposed to the second pair) when they were aligned vertically. Nor was I the only one with this pair (see post 8) or apparently with some other images (see post 15).
The starting point of this was another posting in which a new member thought he had to resize his photos to specific dimensions for his club. I was simply trying to point out that resizing in that manner would only work if the aspect ratio was the same. I wanted to demonstrate this concretely, which is why I created the pair of images I posted here. But then I failed to see precisely what I was trying to illustrate for him, so I posted the images in this thread instead.

It's solved, isn't it?;)

Well, it's understood, but my brain still processes those images incorrectly.

my brain also "processed" the two images as identical the first time I saw your post although admittedly it was on my iphone. On my computer I used my fingers to make a ruler :)

Reading the figures you should have examined the image better. They told you that what you see is not what there is.
Solved?;)

No, George, I did examine the image again, but processed it incorrectly. I assumed that the system was modifying the images from the dimensions listed.
Mods--can we close this thread down? Nothing stands to be gained by continuing it.
