I've been a casual photographer for over 70 years. My grandmother was an accomplished photographer and painter. Dad had 2 Leicas and liked to the record activities and travels of the family. I got the bug from them.

My camera is an old, but good, Canon D7. Nothing fancy, but adequate for my needs.

I have a basic philosophy: If you have a camera with you, you see and appreciate things more, whether you use it or not.

I still have to figure out how to post here. When I do, they will be under my name.

Jim. Have you seen this thread about uploading photos to CinC ?

HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

Although it is possible to do direct uploads there are size restrictions so most of us prefer to use one of the independent photo hosting sites and link images from our personal site.

Hello there people how are you all doing.. it's a lovely day here in Australia Melbourne where I live. I am a published writer for websites including Medium.com with nearly 3K followers of lunatics! I love photography art and video making and like making collages and montages. I was a muso once in a former lifetime. I played drums with tons of bands during the grunge period and the post punk era of 84. It was fantastic and great but I got tired and you get sick of playing the same places all the time except when you're touring! Now that's the greatest!

    Hello, everybody...

Dann is my name - JayDann Walker is the full moniker, but I prefer my 'shorty' second name, it's easier to spell and it can make life easier, many people think I'm Ms Jay, I'm definitely a Mr...

I have been a lurker here for some time - actually, I think I did sign up once, but I didn't find the relevant details in my internet diary and I couldn't figure out how to trace myself on your site - so I signed on the dotted line again, and here I am.

An old duffer, I/me. 70-plus (well past plus!), retired 10 years from an office/shop interior design business I had for 20+ years. Still reasonably fit and active, I walk a lot with a kit bag of cameras so I'm still good for a while, I hope.

Born in Canada but I've lived all over the place - New Mexico USA, Hawaii, Saigon, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Bali and Surabaya, Sydney, nowadays near Melbourne, in a "regional center" out in the bush, 50 kilometers from the Big Smoke, a pleasant small town and an easy commute to Melbourne.

I'm fortunate to have an understanding SO who prefers to stay at home and look after everything, so I spend half of each year traveling in Asia while I still can. I have a small pied-a-terre in Surabaya, Indonesia, an hour by air from Jakarta, 45 minutes to Bali, two hours to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Not much can be said about Surabaya, but it's a good base for me.

This is being written from Surabaya and I'm just back from a few days of snorkeling and swimming in Nusa Dua, Bali. I've been in Indonesia since December ('22) and I'll be here until May, then to Ozzy for a couple of months of easy living, then back to Asia, to Malaysia, Sarawak, Brunei and eventually back to Indonesia before I go home for the end of year celebs.

Asia and notably Indonesia are ideal places for photography, a walk even in my urban neighborhood offers endless subjects for my Fuji XT2 or Nikon D800 (I couldn't make up my mind which 'brand' I preferred, so I bought into the two, ha!). I used to sell stock images and I've been published in a few architectural books in my time, but that market has largely vaporized due to an excess of "digicrap" (my take on microstock) and I now shoot only for my own pleasure and amusement. People, cats, old buildings, street life, mountains, rivers, beaches, rice fields with volcanoes spouting smoke and steam in the distance, are my favorite images. I usually don't post online but I suppose I could be talked into it...

I gravitated to this site after realizing so many of your members tend to making intelligent and perceptive comments and remarks about things photographic without the carping and infighting so common in some other sites.

This said, I hope you'll all overlook my tendency to post about, well, "simplistic" topics like "how do you travel light with a minimalist camera kit?" and "how can I keep the shadows from blowing out when I'm out shooting with my Fuji in bright Australian/Asian sunlight?". I do try to word my posts well, I'm an optimist by nature, and I tend to constructive criticism with the idea that even the most "difficult" things can usually be said politely and without rancor or malicious intent. I see a lot of civility and courtesy here, and I quite like it..!

Cameras now. Digitals. Nikons D800 and D700, Fuji XT2 and XE2, Lumix GF1. iPhone (are we supposed so say this?) for those sneaky shots wen I want an image without anybody looking.

Film. Nikkormats FT2, Nikons N65 (aka F65), about 15 Nikon lenses (at last count). Six Fuji lenses. Four Contax G1s and five Zeiss G lenses. Five or six 1950s German folding cameras, all wonderful machines if at times painfully basic to work with, my current favorite is a Voigtlander Perkeo I. An Exakta from 1955. Three Rolleiflexes (3.5E2 x1, T x2), one Rolleicord Vb. A complete home darkroom and a big fridge full of FB paper and old 35mm and 120 films I hope to some day use up before it expires (or I do). On reading this list, I realize it does seem I buy my cameras in pairs. Always secondhand, so my 'stash' isn't really worth as much as it may seem as I'm not made of platinum or silver. And no Leicas (yet), tho' in the 1980s I had an M2 and M3 with several beaut Leitz lenses, kits, they all had to be sold when my business went thru a hard patch in the '90s. I still miss them.

Actually, in my dream of dreams I would like to have a Leica Q2. SO now and then hints that if I sell all my gear I can easily afford one. But that's too sensible for me, ha!

Looking forward to participating in the forums here and making new friends with all you nice folks.

    DANN

    Hi
Been lurking for a while and am now brave enough to post something (I think!). Ive followed a few of the tutorials, which have either confirmed that I know what I'm doing or have taught me another technique or skill which helps me get those photographs I'm after.
I use Olympus cameras and lenses - I have an em1 and an em5 ii, along with a largish variety of lenses, ranging from the 7-14mm pro lens to the 100-400mm which is relatively new and I am still learning how to get the best from it. My favourite of the moment is the 60mm macro lens.
I live in Perth, Western Australia. I look forward to picking up many more tips, skills and techniques here at Cambridge in Colour.

Welcome to CiC. This is a great place to learn. If you want tips, don't be bashful about posting photos. Unfortunately, a lot of folks here don't, as you can see if you compare the competitions to the regular posts. However, you can get a lot of helpful information by posting, as I have over the years. it also can help to note problems you see in your images or problems that you are trying to solve.

    Hi All
Thanks for adding me to the Forum.
I live in Lincolnshire, UK close to "New York" and even closer to "Boston" [the original ones ] I'm retired and enjoy photography, particularly wildlife.
My wife, who also enjoys photography, had to shield during Covid and so we both stayed at home and stopped photography altogether. Now returning and focusing mainly, though not exclusively, on wildlife in the UK.
I look forward to learning much from the group and sharing my limited knowledge too.
    Thanks again
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Welcome to CiC! Your reference to Boston reminded me of a visit I made to a friend's home in Boston fifty or so years ago when a grad student in England. I believe I have photos taken from the top of the Boston Stump (for the uninitiated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Bot...urch%2C_Boston ).

    Hi Bruce

Thanks for your reply and warm welcome, nice to hear from you and pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Boston, particularly "The Stump" - St Botolph's Church. Savour and hold tight to your memories, Boston is not what it once was! There are some nice old historic buildings in Boston and the surrounding area. However, sadly the whole of the area is in decline! I've never been to the top of The Stump but admired it from a distance on many occasions ~ and helped my wife photograph it at night.

The site seems very quiet, I'm not sure where the people have gone? Several years ago, I looked at the site, often enjoying photos with postings in abundance but it seems a bit like a ghost town/site now. It's strange, especially when so many people try their hand at photography whether by mobile phone, bridge or DSLR. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

Nice to meet with you, Bruce and look forward to many more exchanges.

    Rob

PS - I haven't learned how to use the footer yet, so for info - I shoot with Nikon DSLR but have a very small collection of old/very old film/plate cameras.

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here

Hey, this is my first post here. I'm fairly new to taking photos with any sort of thought given to what I'm actually trying to do. I have a Minolta X-700 that went with me everywhere when I was in my 20's and camping all the time. I guess I rediscovered my enjoyment of taking photos/images recently, and am now learning to use a Fujifilm XT-3. Hope to learn some things here
