Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here

Hello everyone, I am Pearl Photography from Australia currently studying cert IV photography and digital imaging. My genre of photography is portrait. Lately I have been practicing still life photography and I am loving it. I hope to get some feedbacks in some of the works I have done so far, but mostly excited to learn some more and see where my new career will take me in the future.

Just joined. My name is Terry and I live in Jacksonville Florida. I'm a retired General Motors employee. Bought my first 35mm camera back in 1970. I always had a camera and camcorder while the kids were growing up. Now I'm a Grandpa doing the same.

Hi, I'm Len Mc (I am using the Mc because there seems to be a lot of Len,s) I am a young 80 and have been into digital photography about 3 years. After my two Nikon D300s cameras were stolen I switched to an Olympus OMD EM1 which I have found interesting but challenging. My main focus is nature with a little antiquity (mostly old Brantford, ON, my home) and street photos. I will welcome comments and criticism when I post. If I can figure how, I will post a sample here. Thanks, Len Mc

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here

Greetings, fellow photographers! I am so pleased to have discovered this website while Googling the relationship between focal length and ISO. I really appreciate the structure and approach of this online learning community, as well as the introduction to using this site.

I have enjoyed amateur photography since I received my first camera as a child (anyone remember the days of film and pop-up flash, lol?) My dominant genre is nature (mostly flowers, trees and streams/rivers but also birds, waterfowl and some "wild life"). A number of years ago, I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the world of digital photography. At the time, I didn't realize that my camera was, in fact, still a point-and-shoot even though it had some DSLR features (Canon PowerShot). In 2018, I took the plunge and bought an outdated, entry-level "semi-automatic" - Canon Rebel T6 - in order to transition between fully automatic to manual while accommodating for my learning disability. A year later, I bought my first interchangeable lens (elementary telephoto - not the kind for which I needed weight training in order to handle the instrument).

As much as I enjoy photography, I have not been able to graduate to a higher level of expertise because of a "nonverbal" learning disability; specifically, visual perceptual, visuospatial, dyscalculia (mathematical) and motor - all the essential skills needed by a photographer, right? Wouldn't you know, the activity to which I am most attracted is the very thing I can't do.

That being said, I have been told by other non-professionals in the field that I take good photographs, so my "creative" eye must make up for my lack of technical skills. I will continue to enjoy photograhy as a hobby and learn what I can. I recently set up a system of entering aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length and mode (manual, aperture/shutter peed priority, automatic) of the "best" of my shots into an Access database, and set up simple queries to look for patterns. I used to look at all the wrong settings but this form of "learning" just left me discouraged. Ironically, despite my type of disability, I am actually a visual/hands-on rather than academic learner when it comes to grasping photography skills.

Given my past learning experiences, I would appreciate a gentle approach to constructive feedback on any photos I submit. It would be nice to include one positive aspect about the photo to balance what is wrong with it.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum, and I look forward to developing my photographic skills in a supportive and fun learning environment.

Hi LensofNature, welcome to CiC! I'll look forward to seeing some of your photos. If you haven't already seen it, this thread explains how to post photos on the forum: HELP THREAD: How can I post images here? . The instructions are detailed but if you run into difficulties when you post your first photo, don't be afraid to ask a question.

A fellow I worked with many years ago has a a profound and lifelong eyesight problem. But, despite that challenge, he has become a remarkedly good photographer. Speaking myself as someone with physical disabilities, all we can do is work with what we have!

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here

Thank you Bruce, for your response, and helpful link. I will definitely be looking at this thread, as I have difficulty figuring out how to post a photo that is full size rather than thumbnail, especially since I don't have a website/link. I'm in a catch-22 position because a few people have suggested I try to sell my photos, but a website is costly and I don't have any source of income at the moment. I already closed one business because it wasn't self-sustaining. I'm hesitant to invest in the expense of my own website when I have poor marketing/sales skills and would be competing in a saturated market with far more expert photographers than myself. Nonetheless, maybe it's time to explore that option.

How inspiring that your former coworker of many years back has excellled at photography despite his vision impairment. The "business" that I developed was D.I.C.E. (Disability Impact on Career/Employment), a self assessment tool I created that explores how disability affects career choice and work performance, and what workplace accommodations are needed, so the significance of your previous coworker is not lost on me. I developed an e-book version of the assessment tool and have it published but, of course, no sales because as a self-publisher, I'm responsible for marketing the book myself. I've tried, without success.

In the meantime, I'm going to create an album under my Profile. Lol, I tried categorizing my flowers according to type, and am getting nowhere because I don't know the names of half the flowers I photograph. Well, onward and upward as they say.

Welcome, Mindy. I enjoy nature as well, so my genre is nature/landscape photography. Occasionally I've been lucky enough to get some photos of birds and animals.

Welcome, Ian. I'm sorry to hear about your accident and its psychological effects on your health. However, it sounds as if a new world is opening up for you with the OM-D EM10 Mk III (whatever that is when it's at home, lol). Projection mapping sounds intriguing (I've never been able to read maps - or the direction of the sun, for that matter, lol, so I applaud you).

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here

    Hello,

I am not exactly a new member, however it is years since I have been on here, nothing to do with the site, threads, etc though. I am in my mid 60's and live in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, my interests are photography/photographers, history, old transport, and reading (usually about those subjects).

Over the last few years I have gradually gone out less and less, partly due to back problems but mainly I think due to covid exasperating a pre existing stress/anxiety condition. The poor dog hardly gets out and photo opportunities are limited to the back garden. Hopefully in the future I can overcome this, I am certain I am not the only one suffering.

I currently use a Lumix LX100 and a FZ300, a combination the covers most eventualities for me and does not aggravate my back problems. Being retired and on a low pension getting a top range camera/lenses depends on the lottery! If I had the opportunity would I want (or be able) to carry the kit around?

All the best and stay safe.

    Fred

Serious photography hobbyist instead of doing anything else

My name is Teddy Alfrey and I live in Bloomington, Indiana. Apparently, I specialize in macro insects and flowers, but enjoy nature, landscape, architecture, and abstract photography.
From the mid-1970s through 1992, I was a small town professional photographer specializing in weddings, portraits, 4H fairs, and anything I could bring my Mamiya 645 and Nikkormat too. I did all my own darkroom work and even though I loved it, I became burned-out with late nights in a cramped, hot, damp, color darkroom.
I renewed my interest in photography, vowing to never shoot weddings again, once digital photography became serious. As of 2021, I am 69 years old and finally zeroed into photography as my main interest, as opposed to the other things I loved, like playing guitar, roller skating, and road biking. While I might not be that great of a photographer, I believe its the best thing I do and that's the basket into which I shall gather my eggs!

    Teddy,

Welcome to CiC. Glad to see another participant who focuses (no pun intended) a lot on macro and flowers. I do as well, but I'm just an amateur.

    Dan
