Hi, my name is Brian. I live in New Zealand.
I have had some nice gear in the past (eg a Canon film SLR that tracked your eye through the view finder to select one of 9 focal points - very advanced for its day).
I intend to get back into photography now that I am approaching retirement. I have yet to update my gear and Im not sure whether to stick with Canon, or switch to Olympus with the four thirds format.

    Hi Brian, welcome to CiC!

When I switched to digital, I stuck with Canon. But there are others on this forum with enormously more experience and expertise than I have. If you want to pursue this question, it might be worth posting your question in a new thread in the appropriate part of the forum.

    Hi Brian,

    Welcome to CiC.

I agree with Bruce: I'd post your question in the Digital Cameras forum. But as a starter, I think you're asking the wrong question. I'd ask about brands last. All of the major companies are selling cameras far better than what was available a decade ago. Instead, I'd start with what features you might need or want, given what you want to photograph. For example:

    1. If you're going to shoot sports, you'll want very high-end AF. If you're going to shoot macros of bugs, that fancy AF is a complete waste of money.

    2. Are you going to print large? If so, pixel count may be important. If you are only going to display online or print small, high pixel counts won't help you much, if at all.

    3. Are you going to shoot in low light? Some cameras handle low light better than others.

    4. How important to you is weight and size?

    5. Do you want a DSLR or mirrorless?

    And so on.

    Dan

That brought back lots of memories for me Bruce. Back in the dark(room) ages I had a Canon AE-1 but when I went to move to digital I discovered that none of my costly glass would fit the Canon digital bodies. It was the end of a beautiful relationship and I've shot Nikon ever since (they won the comfort and ease of use competition - see below)

Two things to consider: First and most important is to try as many different make/body/lens/ combos as you can manage and settle on the most comfortable ones as your short list; secondly, it is quite clear that all the major manufacturers are going mirrorless so it might be a good idea to future-proof yourself and do the same.

Good luck, enjoy your upcoming retirement (the best "job" I ever had) and please do keep us updated.

That may explain a puzzler for me, Bill. Someone gave me a camera bag with two Canon SLRs in it. An AE-1 and an A-1(?). Having no use for them, I put them up for 50 bucks the pair ... No takers, so I tossed them out!

Many years ago, Canon switched from the FD mount to the EF mount. This was a LONG time ago. FD lenses can be used with an adapter, but I think only fully manually.

I think I would agree with Bill that at least for a typical person, mirrorless is probably the way to go, if you intend to keep building a set of lenses for that body. For many people, it makes little difference now--the sole thing I miss is the better AF of mirrorless, and I prefer an optical viewfinder--but the handwriting is on the wall. The big manufacturers are clearly de-emphasizing DSLRs, and canon has even stopped producing a sizeable number of EF (DSLR) lenses. (That includes the absolutely stellar EF70-200 f/4 II, which I rushed out to buy as soon as they announced that they would stop making them.)

Hi, this is my first post here. I'm fairly new to taking photos with any sort of thought given to what I'm actually trying to do. I have a Minolta X-700 that went with me everywhere when I was in my 20's and camping all the time. I guess I rediscovered my enjoyment of taking photos/images recently, and am now learning to use a Fujifilm XT-3.

I'm sure I can learn much from those on this site, so thank you for being so welcoming of folks new to the group and new to photography.

    Good day!
My name is Ton and I am from Toronto. I am the author and my main activity writing articles. But from youth I was fond of photography and sometimes I take a little part-time job as a photographer. One of the latest works was to prepare photographs for the catalog. The site сambridgeIncolour will be glad to learn something new and useful.

    Hello CIC,

I'm Mike Gillan, living in Exeter in the beautiful South West of England. I've been a keen photographer for some years and I've been finding Cambridge in Colour very useful. The reason I've finally got round to signing up is that I'm just getting serious about printing and I've realised that there's lots of useful information about this in your forums.

Hello. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Bob.
I’m in the UK, living in Saddleworth on the west side of the Pennines, though my address is in Mossley, a small mill town with a lot of stone terraced houses on very steep roads.
I’ve been taking photographs since my early teens. My first digital camera gave a big boost to the quality of my images. I now shoot in micro four thirds format. I got fed up with my local camera club because their interests were predominantly Photoshoppery and competitions. I’m more interested in photo projects and I particularly like mono and street portraiture. I’m a regular attender at the Yorkshire Mono Group and I subscribe to one of the circles in the United Photographic Postfolios of GB. Both of these MAKE me print. I also enjoy making / publishing photo books. My wife and I love India and go there as often as we can – Covid permitting. So I’ve published a number of “zines” of my India street portraits. These are just A5 sized booklets, printed on-line. They work out cheap enough to give away. And the Covid lock-down was an opportunity to self-publish a photo book on Mossley.
I’m very much looking forward to participating in Cambridge in Colour and to submitting some of my photos for comments.

    Hi Folks
I run a website for our local history society that displays old photos of our village. There's about a 1000+ so far & almost every one requires anything from mild to severe restoration. I used to use Photoshop to do this but have since gone over to Affinity Photo. For my purposes it's much better & of course far cheaper.

    Colin,

I joined this site in order to seek advice on how to use the Cambridge in Colour Depth of Field Calculator for a 15.6mm x 23.5mm APS-C sensor camera (Ricoh GRiii and GR iiix specifically). The calculator seems to have an APS category but there are a broad range of sensor sizes within the APS category. Thus, I not sure if that is the correct camera category for me to use in the calculator.

Could you please suggest how I should try to determine which camera category in the calculator would be accurate for my sensor size or whether it simply does not cover such APS-C cameras?

    Regards

    Mark

Mark, I'd suggest putting this message into the 'Digital Camera and Equipment' part of the forum. I don't think the people who might give you an answer will see it in here. By they way, welcome to CiC. I hope that once you've got your issue worked out, that you'll stick around.

ps:- I've copied your message into the relevant section on the forum.

    Hello
I am Taniere from France, my English is not perfect but thanks to google I can communicate with you serenely ;-)).
I run a photo club in my town and I have to deepen certain notions via the internet, but I can not always find precise answers so I am counting on your forum to help me learn.

can we post a message in French or necessarily in English?

    Regards

Bonjour Taniere, welcome to Cambridge in Colour. You are free to post a message in French. However, I'm sure I'm correct in saying that most participants at CiC cannot read French. So you'll receive many more responses to your message if it's in English. It doesn't matter if the English is far from perfect. There are other CiC members whose English is not good but effective communication still occurs.

hello, I'm Len McN I live in Brantford, ON, Canada - At age 81 am an aspiring amateur photographer interested primarily in landscape and nature photoigraphy. Most of my pictures are taken close to home and in the dreaded 10AM to 3 PM time slot. I try to vary the white balance and other factors - use a polariser and/0r neutral density filter to make up for the deficiency on the available light. I am also a member of Flickr where many of my photos are posted. Len McN
