Walsham Gates in b+w

Walsham Gates is a lock on the Wey Navigation Canal. It was built in 1653 and still operates today. Unusually for a lock, it is normal for the lock gates to both be open. They are usually only closed when water levels are high and the overspill is sent over the neighbouring weir.

vegetation growing up the wall or out of the guttering. You should see it in summer !

It is a beautiful photo with a good composition.
It seems to me that the dynamic range of the film is not enough to reproduce the scene. I've always heard that movies (especially black and white) had better dynamic range than digital sensors, but that's not what I'm seeing.
Would it be possible to take two photos (one with film and one digital) of the same scene, with the same photographic parameters (shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length), and post here in the CiC?

I will do that experiment when I get my DSLR back from repair.

It was a very bright day when I took the photo, which I always find problematic for b+w film..... and digital for that matter.

That is definitely incorrect for about the past 10 years, especially for higher end cameras. The best we could get with some of the slowest B&W films was around 10 ev. Colour print film was a couple of stops worse and colour reversal (slide / transparency) film was even worse. A modern digital sensor over the past 3 generations of cameras were often exceeding 14 ev at the base ISO.
