What to do with a lens cap when it is not on the lens...

I handle the lens cap in different ways... If I am carrying a bag I have a space reserved for the cap. If I am wearing a shirt with a breast pocket or a photo vest, I have a pocket reserved for the cap. I try my best to keep the cap free of lint and pocket grime so, when I am shooting in a tee shirt and a pair of jeans, I have this on my belt...

It keeps my cap clean and I always know where it is. Cost less than 2-dollars too - which is cheaper than replacing a lost cap.

Funny thing about lost caps! At one event, a guy came up to me handed me a Canon cap and said "you dropped this". I thanked him and popped the cap into the pocket of my vest. When I reached into the pocket to put the cap back on the camera, there were two caps in the pocket! I realized that the guy had handed me someone else's Canon lens cap which was the same type and size as the one I was using...

I'm pretty good with my lens caps when out in the field, its when I have the lens at home that I tend to misplace one or more.

The only problem I remember with a lens cap occurred on a very cold day, when I put the cap in a trouser pocket. When I took it out again, the inside (closer to my body) was covered with condensation. Since then, in cold weather I have put the lens cap into my bag.

Check out the HUFA and HUFA-S lens cap clips. The difference between the two is the width of the straps they are designed for. I have had the S on both cameras for several years. Works like a charm.

I either leave it in my camera bag or in my pocket. I only use the lens cap when storing the lens.

Unlike that back cap on the lens, that needs to be kept clean and lint free to prevent introducing contaminants into the camera body, the front cap does little more than reduce the risk of getting finger prints on the front element of the lens or filter.

I remove the cap from the lens and drill two tiny hole through it. Then I thread a short length of fishing line through the holes, and tie the ends together. I thread the loop through a camera strap lug, and secure it. When I am using my camera, the cap dangles on the fishing line, safely and out of the way. I have yet to lose a lens cap!

I usually put mine in my pocket and forget it is there. As an aside, I have replaced all of my lens caps with ones from Breakthrough Photography. $7.00 a pop and they are built so much better than the factory lens caps. All of ny lenses are Fujinon, Sony and Zeiss and their caps are junk.

I stick my (front and rear) Lens caps (and Camera cap) in my pocket.

I've related this story before, it's worthwhile again.

In the olden days when there were "Press Photographers" I worked a few months in Melbourne with one (reasonably famous).

He had the standard 'Press Kit' - two 1 Series SLRs; 16 to 35/2.8; 24 to 70/2.8; 70 to 200/2.8; two Speedlites.

All were carried in a Army duffelbag. No lens caps, front or rear. Two bananas and two cans of Coke. Wet weather gear. All were neatly 'thrown in'.

I used to put the lens cap in my pocket and I forgot where it was.
Nowadays, I am using the same lens almost all the time (a Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3) and I decided to fasten the cap on the camera strap using a small cord that passes through a small diameter hole that I drilled into the cap. I had already adopted this solution on my superzoom camera a few years ago.

I use those lens leashes on all my lenes. You can get them on line or camera stores. They have one end (a dot) that sticks to the cap and the other end has an elastic loop that goes around the lens tube. They work find. They might blow around a bit on windy days and if that is a problem I just secure it with my hand when using my tripod.

I find that tethering the lens cap to the lens and having it dangle is a distraction and may cause a pendulum effect on super long shots. I normally use holsters for my cameras and lenses, so I just pop the lens cap in one of the pockets or the vacant holster itself.

Agree 100% - It's hard to shoot when the camera is in a camera bag and the lens cap is on the lens. When that once in a lifetime opportunity comes up and you are fumbling to pull your camera out and take of the lens cap, you like will have missed the shot.

Lens caps are fine when storing the lens but not much more. I'm a bit gentler with the lens end cap as getting it dirty is a great way of introducing dust and dirt into the camera.
