    2019 Project 52 Judith Noble (Urbanflyer) 2nd quarter C & C

    Week 14--Air in Water

Would appreciate any thoughts on how to shoot this to get a sharper image. Through glass and into water. I think I know how to improve DOF, but is that the only thing to change when I work on this some more?

Nice effort, with a shot like this and the beads of water being the main subject I would try to focus on the largest water molecule and perhaps place it either closest to the viewer or perhaps mid center of the image.

Thanks--I am going to work with this a little. They are beads of air, not water!

    Hi Judith,

So is that the result of respiration of the plant?

It's sharp in the middle and blurred out of the middle. I don't know why: lens or glass reflections. With 260mm you should have a rather long distance. If you can't avoid that, try a vanishing line but keep the lens perpendicular on the glass.

Interesting image Judith. Having two additional optical surfaces (the glass in the container with an index of refraction of around 1.5 and the water behind it with an index of refraction of 1.33) you are going to introduce unwanted distortions, especially if the container walls are not completely flat (I assume these are flower stems in a vase?). Add to that the close up shooting position and the shallow depth of field issues that are common to macro work, you have added another level of complexity to this shot. Finally, the image is back it, which will enhance the bubbles but darken the stems so another unusual factor to work with.

When all is said and done, the image is effective and has some almost abstract qualities in parts of the image.

If it were my shot, I would be tempted to crop a bit off the bottom. The little triangle between the stems is probably more or a distraction than something that adds to the shot. I might have done a touch more sharpening to counter some of the focus softening and might also have opened up the shadows a bit.

no--just air trapped in the "hair" on the stem of the plant immediately after immersing the stems

Thanks George and Manfred--of course I did not think of moving from a round vase to a flat one, which I do have. I'll work with this idea a bit more.

Hi Judith - I like the idea of capturing the submerged bubbles! It is a hard task shooting through glass and the added reflections from the bubbles. I'll be interested in your next attempt.

I like this image very much, although I would have been tempted to call it the Yellow Brick Road.

Week 14, nicely composed, I would've captured a bit more of that top row of windows. Are you planning to print?

    Or crop them out perhaps?

They were an issue--the tops of the windows were very light and hence distracting. My other choices were to clone them out (totally possible) or crop them out completely--and lose some of the height I felt the image needed. Perhaps I should have cloned them. I am not really catholic about not making adjustments to photos in post--This time I thought my decision was conservative and ok. Can see both sides.

Nicely seen. A calming and reflective image.

    Judith,

Thanks for the response, perhaps my observation was more related to thinking of the composition as a print and how those partial frames would fit within the frame.

Week 16, an oddly interesting capture; especially the muted colors which are sometimes presented during stormy weather.

Very nice images;the first image has a novel idea;but a bit disturbing to eyes; second image of the path and the fourth image (this is a member of mushroom family,no?) are wonderful. I would like to know the aperture value used in the fourth image.
