A studio shot from yesterday afternoon of Betty Baewatch (not her real name )...

The shot was taken against a white backdrop that was lit by a single studio light equipped with a blue gel.

Nice effort, is the blue fringe intentional?

That is the impact of the blue light bouncing back from behind her from the illuminated seamless paper. We see this effect all the time and it is something often done on purpose, i.e. a rim light.

The reason you are picking it out is that the blue colour is not something you are used to seeing but it occurs in almost all studio shots where light is bouncing off the background. The model was about 3 - 4m / 12 - 15 ft away from the background

I'm familiar with ring light, at recent shoot we had small continuous light directly behind the model's head, the slightest movement left or right would create a blown highlight.

Sometimes that is the effect that the photographer wants. I've used a just a bare speedlight in the back exactly the same way as you describe the ringflash use.

Nicely lit, the eyes are a little dull though. (I got picked up for that on one of my shots and now I'm seeing it everywhere).

Unfortunately the comment that was made on your shot made no sense to me. Reflections from the eyes depends on a thin layer of tears on the eyes. When someone's eyes are dry, they are less reflective. That's the case here.

If one notices this, then getting the model to blink a few times usually fixes the "problem". In my view, it's not really an issue.

The catch lights in the models eyes are as shot. The camera right eye of the toy is painted in (i.e. copied from the camera left eye). This is a single light shot, so there is only one catchlight in each eye.

My very very inexperienced take on this is ... not one of your best Manfred. I find it to be a bit on the soft side, and the "stuff" around her hair (yes, poor term and yes it's explained in the thread) is very distracting.
I'll admit, it's not my kind of photography either, but that's beside the point.

Pure sloppiness on my part. I used Imagenomic Portraiture to smooth the skin and didn't clean things up in my haste to get the sample images out to the group I shot. Often it will just cleanup the face but the skin got cleaned up as well.

I'll go back and clean this up better when I have a bit more time.
