It's a damselfly, not a dragonfly. Two key markers are the spherical eyes and the fact that the wings are back and almost parallel to the body when at rest.
for comparison, here is a dragonfly at rest. Note the different shape of the eyes and the position of the wings, which are perpendicular to the body when at rest.
They are related; both are in the order Odonata, and both catch their insect prey in flight. Quite amazing creatures, actually. They are like very fast helicopters, able to stay in place and then dart in any direction quickly.

This is a Large Red Damselfly Pyrrhosoma nymphula. Vary common and widespread an sn early emerger.

Females, like that one, have more black on their abdomen than the males and there is also a colour variation which is extensively black.
