We're very clean living hereabouts (and I gave up smoking 14 months ago - just thought I'd remind you of that!).

I think Rob's right. It isn't dirty enough yet. We need the thaw to start and then everything will be really awful.

In the meantime I do hope other people are looking in on this discussion. I think it offers an important learning opportunity about to handle exposure and PP treatment of a substance such as snow.

    Donald

I added a search tag of 'snow' to this thread and your racing one.

I think you guys have this pretty well sorted out, but I've been playing around trying to see what I can do and I thought I would post. I wouldn't mind some feedback on the PP. I will concede that Donald's and Rob's versions are better, but wouldn't mind hearing some thoughts on this one, and especially whether I have introduced any PP artefacts that were not there before.

A very interesting learning/teaching thread methinks...however for some reason I cannot see the original flickr image by Donald in the original post or in any of the reply with image in the quote posts..

Thanks for the lessons Dave. I need all the technical advice I can get.

IMO, Rob's version does have more punch to it but Donald's original definitely has a moodiness to it. I like both so I guess it depends on what you - Donald - want to portray. It's interesting to learn about how far to go with the PP depending on what you want to achieve.

The street does look a mess but, I get the sense of people living here (the cars, the wires, the plowed street - evidence of people) but of cozy, quietness - people warm and safe, buried in their homes (the cars parked). It, honestly, makes me feel like it's a holiday or, at least, the day's work is done. I, also, got hooked easily by the "exotic" location and, then, wanted to look because there was so much to see - what IS down that road and around that bend? The chimneys and rooftops and road all made me stop and study to see - there's so much hidden here. I love that! That added another wave of subtle emotion and reaction. Put simply, the image made me stop and stare! Sorry about the "cozy" interpretation.

It's great, though, as I was writing all of this, I never had to scroll up to "double check" what I'd seen. The image is imprinted in my mind - although, I think I want to go take another look to see what I missed.
    Oh, dear, was I rambling???

The purpose of this was twofold:.....

    2. To convey the sense that when it's drab and grey, snow loses its pretty, winter scene, Bing Crosby-like appeal. But don't tell Katy I said so.
Yes, yes,...... I'm a hopeless romantic. That's just the way it is, okay? However, you know how "they" say that everyone brings their own experiences to a piece of art? Well, THIS is not grungy snow. This is new, christmassy snow! GRUNGY snow is when you haven't seen the ground for four months and it's March and you don't think that you're going to make it two more weeks until it's melted and there's glorious mud and you're discovering all sorts of "artifacts" from the different (now) exposed layers of melted snow. THAT's when the whole world of snow is helplessly, depressingly dirty. I think the strongest way to support my theory is that it's too pretty with the snow still clinging to the bushes and on the rooftops. It's still fresh!

Rob's second edit is amazing. I really wish that I could get that kind of clarity! He did this kind of thing to my orchid, too, and I wouldn't even know how to start to get that with my own photos. I think, first, I just need to let my eye learn how to discern the difference more clearly. Now, I want to "turn on the lights" with the first one. However, there's something in the first one that is, now, lost and I think that I would bumble along like an idiot if I tried to express it. I'll just say that, the first one has a sense of looking into the past or another world or a different time. It's a little surreal and the newer one isn't so much.

Katy said I should comment first then read the posts. Ooooh K i think she wants to hear my initial reaction.
Awwwww, look at the chimneys! It's wonderful fairytale land. I appreciate both the sharpened and un-sharpened images, though I think I love the un-sharpened one as its whites are dulled out and it gives it the nostalgic feeling of an old photo.

    Yes, we're both romantics.

OK scrolling up now to read what everyone said.

That is a very male trait. If you study a male dominated thread we all say the same things but just put the words in a different order except Rob always manages to mention his little pink camera and Donald always weaves booze into the critique

Just had a great idea to make it more edgy. Drag a dead sheep (or cow if a sheep is not to hand) up the road and selectively colour leaving the blood trail red......I know I am just an old romantic at heart

LOL, Steve. Pink cameras and booze! My kind of people. I'm gonna love it here!

Oh and don't tell, but I love your idea of the sheep. It's really deep.

What, moi! Wendy has one too - we have to keep 'em apart to avoid a scandal.
