Re: Senior pic
Nice efforts, both are nicely exposed, the second suffers from the excessive crop of the hand and the torn area of the jeans too close to the edge of the composition. Also, watch out for an overly dynamic leading line in the background distracting from the model.

Re: Senior pic
There's that smile again. It's definitely causing you some issues with how the lines of your subject's face are falling and the shadows this is causing are breaking up the light on her face in an unattractive way. You could dodge and burn those out.
Posing your model square to the camera tends to "add weight", which is why the angled pose is so popular among portrait photographers. The treatment of the hands works in the first image and not as much in the second one. Shooting the hands on edge, rather than flat on gives a much more flattering look. Briefing your subject on posing before the shoot is something I always do and it tends to make the model more conscious of a correct pose, especially if they have limited experience in front of a camera.
I agree with John's comments on the issues with the crop regarding the hand and the tear in the jeans, but he has missed an even more serious issue. Cropping through a joint in this type of image making is viewed as poor workmanship. A crop should never be through a joint, but rather above it. Doing so draws the viewer's eyes to that part of the image, and that is not where you should be pulling it.
