My Scotland adventure

I knew I would love Scotland, but I didn't know just how much.

I've been home for a few weeks now and I miss it already! I took a ton of pictures, of course.

We had incredible weather! A lot more sunshine than I anticipated. I will say though that I struggled a bit with my settings, and even with post. I'd appreciate any and all comments on what I might have done wrong and how to improve it.

Nicely composed series, most look slightly underexposed so starting there, how did you choose your camera settings?

The first composition looks good but could lose the rocks, if they were more in focus this composition would work. The other shots just need a bit more exposure in the midtones. Nice efforts.

Nicely composed series, most look slightly underexposed so, starting there, how did you choose your camera settings?

Most of the scenes seem to have a Lighting Value of 13 to 14 EV according to the camera settings, so maybe the posted images are close to what was seen by the OP? For example, the last shot was at f/11, 1/125 sec which would be 15 EV at 100 ISO - but shot at 400 ISO is -2 EV, so scene lighting was about 13 EV.

I see that the camera exposure was manually controlled: so what led to the choice of the settings is unknown to me. Perhaps those bright clouds ...

Refreshing to see the sky in these, and the cloud detail. I like the shadows even though they don't feel entirely intentional, I appreciate it when I see them. It's truly a picturesque place to practice one's nature composition for sure and these photos show a good measure of attentiveness during the shoot. A bit more post would probably do a real treat to those exposures.

Scotland looks even better than I imagined I always wanted to visit this country. Having read a Lonely Planet Scotland travel guide, I decided that it should be my next travel destination. And your photos persuaded me that I was right. Thanks for sharing such wonderful shots!

A few thoughts.

#1 Loch Shiel. Too much out of focus foreground? I would consider losing about half of the foreground and going to a more panoramic size ratio?

#2. Glencoe. Is there too much sky which is dominating the scene. Possibly lose some sky and maybe a little bit of foreground to fit into a 4 x 5 ratio? Alternatively, if the sky is to be the main feature; is there too much foreground ? The current balance between land and sky seems 'wrong' with neither one being the chief point of interest.

#3. Glencoe. Your cloud highlights are over exposed.

Yes, the various suggestions for improvement are valid, but that does not detract from the conclusion that this is an excellent set that does justice to your time here.
