How to take a screen shot (likely been asked before but not by me)
I need to take a or some screen shots, however have not been able to figure out how (I guess my brain just does not to wrap it self around how to do it). I am using Photoshop CC newest version, I have an image up and on the right hand side of screen all the info. Now I need a screen shot of the info on the right hand side of the screen, or the whole thing whatever is easier.
I need this explained to me in baby steps and very simple words. It is funny I can wrap my brain around complex ideas but when somethings should be easy it is down the rabbit hole for me.

Try this: alt/command then prt sc which is located top row. Paste to 'paint.' Good luck.

Allan - my process is similar to Ole's; again on a PC.
Pressing the Print Screen button captures the entire screen (in my case both screens as I am using a dual screen setup). Pressing the <Alt> <PrintScreen> button captures the active window only (which is normally what I do).
I then use Photoshop to do my edits. I open a new document ( <Ctrl> <n>) and select the "From Clipboard" selection and then use <Ctrl> <v> to paste the capture into the document. I just follow a normal edit workflow from there.

You can also use the Snipping Tool if you are working with Windows 7 through 10...

Yes, snipping tool works well. For ease of use, I recommend pinning it to the taskbar.

The snipping tool has the advantage that you get only what you want, for example, part of one window. The old snipping tool still works, but it has been supplanted in Windows 10 by a new one called Snip & Sketch. It has the same clipping functionality, but it has additional features, such as being able to write on the snip--for example, putting a circle around something in the image.
I sometimes use this in conjunction with Irfanview, a very powerful and useful free image viewer.

I'd not tried the new version. I've used FastStone when I needed to do that. I'll have a look. Thanks, Dave

One other way than the snipping tool, is if you have Windows 10 and enable the clipboard, then not only can you store multiple text, images etc on the clipboard, but you can also take a snip that you do not need to save. I use this far more than the snipping tool. The way to take the copy onto the clipboard is to press Windows key/Shift key/s. However, as I say, you have to change the settings for the clipboard first, once and only once, then it works from that day on. What I do often is to copy this way to the clipboard, then open a blank document in Affinity Photo (the greatest). Paste - Cntl/v, then in Affinity Photo, I choose Clip Canvas and the document is immediately takes on the native size. Would be sure there is something similar in Photoshop.

I want to thanks all who replied. Went I hit the PrtScn button it takes a screen shot, and puts it on a new layer, have not figured out using the clip board. Will work on it.

The clipboard is automatically enabled in Windows. It has been in all of the versions of Windows I have used. If you hit prt scrn, it automatically stores the screenshot in the clipboard.
The new option in Windows 10 is to store a clipboard history, that is, to store more than one thing in the clipboard. Here is one description of that feature. I have never used it.
Here's how the snipping tool (either version) works. If you use plain vanilla windows straight out of the box, when you create a snip, it is automatically placed in the clipboard. You have the option of saving the clip as a file, but you don't have to do that to have the clip stored in the clipboard. If you then snip something else, the first snip is deleted from the clipboard and is replaced by the new one. Exactly the same thing happens with prt scrn and alt prt scrn, except those don't give you the option of saving to a file.
The new clipboard history feature, if you enable it, would preserve the first snip for later use.
I have used all of the screen shot features, and for my uses, I have found the snipping tool to be the most useful, as it gives you complete control over what is and isn't included in the screen shot.

Thanks Dan instead of it going as a new layer in Photoshop now it goes to the clipboard so I can use it to show at our camera club what I did and how I did it. Thanks again
Cheers: Allan
