    Raptor in a neighbor's yard

I don't do much wildlife photography, but when I went on my deck to grill last night, I saw this raptor sitting on a swing set very close by. It patiently waited until I ran to get a camera and long lens, and then it just stood there as I gradually walked closer, taking shots as I went. This was slightly cropped, taken at 400mm with a 5D III.

I'm not certain what it is, although I have a hunch, but I sent this and a rear view to an expert and will update this when I am certain.

Thanks. Tentative identification: a juvenile broad-winged hawk.

Thanks, all. A more confident identification: a juvenile red-tailed hawk. They are common here, and apparently their plumage is quite variable. Now my wife will be delighted if it decides to eat some of the rabbits that damage our garden..

Close. Maybe 20 or 25 feet. He was not concerned.

Yup, but he must have decided that I’m too big to eat.

Looks very good, here on my cellphone Dan. I have only managed ever to take photos of 'tame' ones!

This is a grab shot that turned out very well. I had a somewhat similar experience earlier this year except that the bird was further away. After dithering whether it was a juvenile Cooper's hawk or a juvenile red tailed hawk (we get both), I ultimately decided it was a Cooper's.

Wonderful image Dan! I wish my wildlife subjects sat this still for their pics!
