Jacky and her broken foot

Jacky is a three-year old Maltese mix who has a broken foot. She had fallen out of the basket of a bike. It is a dangerous practice to have a dog riding in the basket of any bike - especially with no restraint. I have even seen dogs jump out of shopping carts in stores. That's a long way down for a small dog.



Anyway, Jacky is scheduled for orthopedic surgery tomorrow which will repair her foot. Right now, she is wearing a soft cast and a Fentenyl patch to alleviate pain. The shelter remarked that their vet said she would need amputation but, we have a great orthopedic vet who will save her leg

So much for the scene in "The Wizard of Oz" with Toto in the basket. Another think that puzzles me is to see someone riding a bicycle with a big dog on a leash. That person is one squirrel away from a serious mishap.

Richard, as I have said before, those dogs are lucky to have you and your organization. I wouldn't have the foggiest idea on how to anesthetize a dog. Different drug doses, metabolism, etc.

We are very fortunate to have an excellent vet hospital which not only provides our rescue dogs great care but, gives us a healthy discount on the fees charged. It still isn't cheap. Jacky's surgery including the pins she needs to secure her tiny bones will cost $2,400 USD! However, that is less than half of what a vet in Los Angeles estimated the cost to be. Financially, we would not be able to provide our dogs the level of care we do if it were not for that hospital.

We have an surgeon at that vet hospital who has performed miracles for our dogs. We had one dog that was coughing badly and we thought it was kennel cough. It turned out to be a tear in her diaphragm. Our surgeon told us that this would be a serious surgery and, while he would try his best, he could not guarantee the outcome. We opted for surgery and that dog is now living a full happy life in a loving adoptive home.

He is also an excellent orthopedic surgeon and will be doing the surgery to repair Jacky's foot this morning...

While I understand that people love dogs, I can't help but wonder how many hungry kids could be fed with that kind of money.

My feeling is that it is good that people make different decisions as to which charities they support. It means there is a broad and active charitable sector for the homeless, for animals, for research into diseases, and for women in crisis, to name but a few. There is something for eveyone who is in a position to donate time, goods or money.

I agree with you entirely. I do support, however modestly, many charitable organisations and I admire Richard's dedication to the cause of his choice. The world needs more people like him and his wife.
