This is what I like doing when I think the colours are right. The colours are right in this image.

    Re: Autumn colors

Somewhere around 5% of the images at a competition I was asked to judge this past week were ICM and other forms of abstracts. This is the first time I actually had to sit down and think about (a) assigning a score and (b) making comments on this genre. Being online judging, I had more time to think about it than one does in more traditional juried competitions where the judges see the image for 10 - 15 seconds and have to score them.

In the end, I looked at these images much the same way I would look at a landscape; distractions, especially near the edges, visual flow through the images as well as more traditional views of technical, compositional and emotional impact.

I found that the bottom right had corner did distract me, but a bit of content aware fill as well as some traditional dodging would "calm" that aspect of the shot. There was a bit too much green on the left hand side and a bit of dodging and burning to help direct the viewer through the image might be appropriate too. I ended up with the following image as a first cut. I think I might consider either a small crop or burn down the yellow near the bottom some more...

    Manfred,

Thanks. Interesting. A few of your edits involved taking farther steps I had already taken.

I wouldn't clone out the tree trunk, however.

    There's a tree trunk?

Thanks Dan - now I see it. It looked like a distracting element near the edge; that is why I removed it.
