Photoshop CC 2020 has arrived

There should be no need to keep the computer running. Adobe allows a considerable time between checks. However, you may have exceeded whatever that limit is (I think maybe 30 days, but I may be remembering wrong.)

In theory, if you connect to the internet and then make sure the program is registered on that computer while you are connected.

I did connect to the internet when that message first appeared and everything seemed OK for a couple of days but then the problem reappeared. Maybe it didn't fully clear the issue that time so when it happens again I will try another internet connection.

When I last tried to open Photoshop I had an error message about a problem with preferences and telling me that default preferences would be applied. So far, I haven't seen any difference so I don't yet know if I will need to reset anything.

I am from a previous generation which was always taught to turn off all electrical appliances when you leave the room to prevent any risk of fire, so I still do that with anything which I consider to be doubtful; like computers and televisions etc. But, admittedly, I do leave the telephone switched on.

When opening the new version I keep getting a message to say that Photoshop cannot access the internet to check that I am an approved user and it blocks the software at that stage. My main work computer is never connected to the internet, except for getting updates.

However, I have found that if I then close it down and reopen it again everything works normally the second time. Not a great problem but rather annoying.

Your computer has to connect to the licensing server once every few months. Once the license gets updated via an internet connection it should stop whining for quite some time.

I really think you have no need to leave your computer on. I virtually never do, and I have never had that problem with Adobe. I checked, and my recollection was correct: the software validation last 30 days. The message you got is indeed the one that pops up if the software can't reach the server when the time is up. Leaving the computer connected to the internet for a few days when it is on anyway ought to solve this. If not, I wonder if it would work sign out and then sign back in. Anyone know if there is any reason not to do this?

I do the same at home with the computer but the modem and tons of other stuff is still powered. The electrical gubbins for the house alarm system (including phone line connection) has been turned on now for 12 years continuously.

Like I say at work I would never turn off the computer. That would have been the easy part. The difficult part would have been clambering into the void under the desk in the morning to find the power switch amongst a bank of separate computers. I would have had no idea which was mine.

The power consumption of computers when they are not at least put into sleep mode is quite substantial. It varies a great deal, but I have read 60-250 W. If my arithmetic is correct, at the low end, one of these left running for 12 hours/day while not in use consumes 262 kWH/year, which seems to me like a lot of carbon dioxide for not much purpose. I can drive my Prius Prime over 1,000 miles on that much electricity.

That's one reason I don't leave my computers on overnight, if I can avoid it. I often leave them in sleep mode if I will be away for a while, but that uses very little power.

On this side of the pond, there has recently been some attention to the considerable amount of power that is used by appliances that are "off", which is sometimes called "standby power". Some of the numbers are surprisingly high, particularly once you factor in time and convert to kWH. For example, https://standby.lbl.gov/. Some agencies are now selling or distributing power strips that are controlled by one device that uses zombie power but shuts the rest off. For example, most of the equipment connected to my TV is on one. The amplifier is left in its zombie state so that it can be turned "on" by a remote. Most of the rest is truly off and is turned on automatically by the power strip when the amp is turned on. In two other places, , I simply put everything on a regular power strip and turn everything off with a single switch.

Manfred your reply #54 mine did not automatically show up and it was all my Nik. I read somewhere with updates that happens but with a full new version no, yours did mine did not. That said it was a 30 second fix as a 2019 Photoshop folder was still showing and the only thing in it was my plug-ins.
