This original lighthouse on Scalpay was one of the first in Scotland, and was built by Thomas Smith before being replaced by Robert Stephenson in 1824. The one built by Stephenson is called Eilean Glas lighthouse.
For anyone interested further details can be found via this LINK from where you will see an image of the old and new side by side.
#1 General View of the remains of the original Lighthouse. It seemed to me that it was now being used as a roost by the local birdlife.
#2 Closer to view the Ancient Monument plaque, it's a shame that someone decided to kick the door in!
What a marvellous thread! I will come here in my next life and comment extensively - time is getting short!
