External power for operating Canon Powershot G1x mk3?

I have a Canon Powershot G1x mk3 that features an option for charging the battery in the camera by using a ‘Compact Power Adaptor CA-DC30E’. The battery capacity in this camera is limited, and it is a nuisance having to change the battery too often when working in a studio.

I took it for granted that it also would be possible to operate the camera with the power adaptor connected, but this is not so as far as I can understand. The only thing I can do is viewing pictures stored in the memory.

On Canon website there is no update for the firmware that operates the charging features in this camera. I saw that for instance the new Canon EOS M6 Mark II facilitates operating the camera with an external power connected.

Is there a solution for operating the Canon Powershot G1x mk3 connected to external power?

I have some experience with In Camera Battery Charging - not your model camera, but all has been with Canon gear: my experience is the same. The connection to mains power is for battery charging, not for camera operation.

Yes I agree that the term "Power Adapter" is misleading at the least, false advertizsng and the worst.

Interesting the information you mention regarding Canon EOSM6 MkII. Thanks - I'll investigate that myself, as I have an M5.

My advice - if you don't get definitive info on the web regarding a Firmware update, then get in touch with Canon (telephone them) and hound them until you get to talk to a tech who knows what they are talking about.

Would appreciate you posting here what you find out.

I agree that you should ask canon. AFAIK, you are the only person posting here who uses that camera, so it isn't likely that anyone here can answer it. However, I have found that it is best to e-mail them. Almost all of my e-mails have received prompt and accurate replies.

Thank you for an interesting post. I took a closer look at my camera and found that there is a small lid on the side of the battery compartment that can be lifted aside to make it possible to close the battery-compartment lid, using this AC Power unit that has an electric cord connection. This is necessary when using a tripod.
Now I will cross-check the google-information.

Thanks Richard, seems a wide range accessories distributor. They have one for an M5 too; and they ship to AUS and take VISA. Just got to make my order big enough to make the shipping worthwhile, you should ask them for a commission.

Local area phenomenon I suspect. Canon Australia are not that good at emails.

After some searching on Canons websites I found that ylmart.com ".. Coupler" is listed on the UK-site (same picture), but it only points to G1x mk2 as compatible, not the G1x mk3. I wonder if Canon stopped selling the ".. Coupler" after G1x mk2 was launched - and that this website was not updated?

The mk2 and mk3 uses the same battery NB-13L.

I have ordered the Adapter kit. the ".. Coupler" from ylmart.com and hope that it is the Canon product that I will receive. On ylmart.com the ".. Coupler" is listed as compatible with G1x mk3.

The second one on ylmart.com, the ".. Adapter" is probably a third part product. Subtel is one of more providers. It is listed with 4 volt output, but the battery NB-13L yields 3,6 volts. Could this be a problem?

02.01.2020 - WARNING:
I have received the '.. Coupler' from ylmart.com and it was the wrong one, not the one from Canon, but the third part item above. And this '.. Coupler' was too big for the battery compartment, and yielded 4.6V which is too much for the g1xmk3.
I got no explanation on the wrong marketing and product, they said that it was the supplier that was responsible and offered me a return at my own expense if I wanted money back.
It seems that they do not have exact information on the items they sell, and I will be very cautious buying something from them in future.

I will now make my own external power supply as the Canon ACK-DC100 Adapter is discontinued (and probably not made for the g1xmk3, but the g1xmk2 that uses a bigger battery NB-12L): making a plug with contacts, and use this DC-supply:

CONCLUSION WITH A QUESTION
I have now put together the MeanWell RS-15-3.3 power adaptor, and the DR-110 Coupler NB13L dummy battery - and it fits ok in my Canon g1x mk3.

BUT the initial current of 3.6V current is not enough to stop the camera from shutting down. Tuning the power adapter to its max 3.95V the camera started to operate, but not every time. This I strange as Canon specifies 3.6V as its battery current. Maybe the camera needs at least 4V to operate properly when using a DR-110 Coupler? I will try with an adapter with a little stronger current and will report later on this.
Anybody with similar experiences?

I would like to work without having to change batteries - with repro work, with studio work, and with time-lapse photography.

CONCLUSION WITH A SOLUTION
Finally it looks as I have found a good solution to operate my Canon with external power. I have acquired a cable: 'Vitesun 5V USB DC4.2V 4.0mmx1.7mm' from aliexpress.com that is to be used with a 5V USB power bank, and it reduces the output current to 4.2V.

I connected the Vitesun cable to a 'DR-110 Coupler NB13L dummy battery' and I measured the output of the Vitesun to 4.18V with the power bank connected. The battery verification procedure in the camera responded as it should, and the camera works properly.

The battery NB-13L has a normal capacity of 1250 mAh, and my new power bank is a waterproof Clas Ohlson 100500 mAh, so the operating time ought to be at least 6 times longer. So even when there are no battery symbol in the viewfinder, the risk of running short of power should be small.
This power bank has an output of 5V 2.1A, not automatic higher as in power banks with fast charge for batteries. It is just a no-nonsense battery. This is important not to damage the cable or camera, as they not are batteries.

And there is an another advantage with the Vitesun cable, it can be connected to a USB power adapter as well. I tried my iPad power adapter with output 5.1V 2.1A instead of the power bank and it worked the same way. And this iPad power adapter is ideal for charging the Clas Ohlson 100500 mAh power bank!

A QUESTION
Some years ago Canon sold an item for external power for cameras using the NB-13L battery. I would be grateful if any on this forum could provide me with the specifications for this. This will be of help in judging third part items for external power.
