I cranked down the shadows a lot, deliberately to get a very high contrast between the dark and light parts of the road. Because I don't do local adjustments (layers, masking, dodging, burning, etc.) the left part got very dark maybe even black. I did crop a large part of the left side and possibly more would have worked to avoid the 'black hole' effect ...

Conventional advice is to have some detail even in shadows but this was supposed to be a thematic image, so I broke some rules, ho ho.
