Wharf and launch - Lake Taupo - in B&W

I pondered for a while whether to add this image to my earlier thread of the image in colour. Eventually, decided to use a fresh post because I stuffed up the original post, resulting in the approx. five comments being about people not being able to see the image.

Anyway, here is my latest effort

Sorry Jim, this image does not work particularly well for me.

You have a great set of leading lines the force the viewer's eyes to move towards the background, which is quite soft.

For this shot to have worked, I suspect that you need an image that is sharp throughout which likely suggests you needed to focus stack. The other element that is not working for me is the position of the boat. Again, the leading lines direct our eyes to a distant target that is not where it needs to be, inside the area where the bollards on the dock point us to.

Many thanks, for your very clear comments, Manfred - much appreciated. I will take them onboard (pun intended ) for my next shoot of this type. My setting was f18, maybe it needed to be smaller yet.

Have you checked depth of field and hyperfocal distance tables? Selecting the appropriate focus distance will be important to determine whether or not you can get this as a single shot, otherwise you might have to look at a technique like focus stacking.
