Re: Remnants of Fall
Hi Raymond,
This is a learning forum, so I hope you won't mind some suggestions.
First, images like this are very hard to pull off, for the reason Nandakumar gave: the background, being detailed and right there with no separating distance (so it is not out of focus), is very distracting. Because I do macro photography, I have done a lot of shots on the ground, and I end up throwing out most of them. So when you compose something like this, ask yourself whether the background will overwhelm it.
Second, the framing of the first one seems off to me. The primary subject is down towards the bottom, there is some interesting detail (the second nut and the leaf) that is chopped off by the border, and there is a lot of distracting space full of just the background on the top right. I think it would work better to aim to the left and down.
In addition, nothing is really sharp, especially in the second. I can't tell for sure, but I think this is more likely motion blur than a focusing issue. The low light forced you to shoot with a wide aperture and a slow shutter speed. I wouldn't got much narrower because you don't want the background to be even more in focus, but that means a faster shutter speed (boosting ISO) or a tripod.
I hope these are helpful.
Dan

Interesting, I agree the background being slightly distracting from the nuts - perhaps use a blur filter and add some "clarity" to the actual nut for more detail otherwise, your remnants of fall are very pleasing
