One very lucky dog...

Our Rescue Group president in Los Angeles got a phone call from Tijuana, Mexico that one of our rescue dogs had been found as a stray below the border... The dog was wearing one of our collars with our rescue phone numbers engraved. The finder sent a cell phone image of the dog. As with many cell phone photos, it was difficult to see the dog. The caller did not speak much English and our president knows only one word of Spanish - "Tacos".

This started a process that took two days to complete. It was a dual problem. First, how to get the dog to us and secondly to identify the dog.

We were quite angry that someone had adopted a dog from us and had lost the dog without notifying us, This violated our adoption contract.

It takes four to eight hours to get across the border these days unless you have special entry-exit pass. Also, bringing a dog across the border be an administrative nightmare. We contacted a rescue group that specializes in rescuing dogs from Mexico and they agreed to help us,

Then I began looking at all the thousands of images I have amassed to try to identify the dog. We contacted people who had adopted a dog that somewhat looked like the cell phone image but, they all had the adopted dogs safely in their homes.

The rescue group, helping us, picked up the dog in Tijuana and delivered her to our vet. When we arrived at the vet, we learned that the dog was not one of our rescues She didn't have a microchip and we never place a dog for adoption without a microchip. Additionally we didn't recognize the dog...



Why this dog was wearing a collar with our ID tag is a puzzle. Probably someone who adopted a dog from us changed collars and left the tag on the old collar. Somehow that collar and tag made its way down to Mexico and ended up on this stray animal...

Our vet examined her and she is healthy and around seven years old. We ensured that she was vaccinated and had a battery of other tests done. We made an appointment to have her teeth cleaned at our vet and we will put some weight on her skinny frame. We will also get her groomed and we are making her feel at home with us. She is quite frightened...

She is a lucky little girl... Our collar and tag (however it ended up around her neck) earned her a trip across the Border and she will end up in a good home...
