I like this image alot. The set of chop sticks on the left intersect the bowl dead center. If all the chop sticks were percisly spaced apart and intersected dead center of the bowal it would be more geometricly percise.

I also like the synmbology of the arrangement. An orb with desending rays.

Great shot ! The little highlights (?) on the bowl at 5 o/c add a tiny note of real-world imperfection and stop it from being too perfectly symmetrical.

Very observant, David. My winter project is to create 4 - 6 still life images (prints), based on items found in the kitchen or dealing with eating or drinking. The title of my project is "Small Imperfections". The mark you have noticed is actually a gold coloured decorative paint on the bowl.

I have a shot with one grain of brown rice a bowl of white rice, but am still working on that one.

All are being shot on a white background and at this point, I am looking at either shooting straight from the top or perfectly level. My first of the series was the high key shot of a teapot with a tiny drip on it.

At first I thought the decorative paint was an imperfection of the shooting, so small yet this calls the attention to it. Great work and a neat topic, can't wait for the next still.

Here is a side view of the wooden rice bowl and the painted gold and silver markings are plainly visible.

This one works very well, the composition works for me especially the colours of the chopsticks with the white rice in the brown bowl. I can see why you would consider using a grain of brown rice.
Once again I’ll look forward to seeing any iterations of this image. Will you be sharing how you lit the subjects in this series

The next time I do another image in this series, I will include a shot of the whole setup. It is rather complicated.

Unfortunately, that likely won't happen for a few days as I have a number of commitments that will keep me from working on this before the weekend or early next week.

Here is the setup I used:

    1. Work is sitting on a low table on a white background (piece of mat board, in this case).

2, Camera is set up on a tripod with a horizontal adaptor arm. The only thing missing is the camera.

    3. Studio light with a white beauty disk, pointing downward is the only light I am using. I'm using a boom arm to position the light over the scrim.

    4. A small (1m x 1m) scrim is placed between the light and camera.

Thanks for showing the lighting arrangements that you’re using for this image Manfred.
