Tight depth of field... Rio
Reworked a photo from a couple of years ago. I always liked the tight DOF this image possessed, but the image never worked for me. At original aspect ratio there were distracting elements in the top right. I have now gone for a non-standard crop and I feel it works better.

Peter - this one doesn't work all that well for me because the DoF is a touch too shallow.
The rule of thumb of the image being okay as long as the eye closest to the camera is sharp tends to infer that the rest of the features are "sharp enough" so that they are not a distraction. The snout and nose are so soft that they are noticeable and distracting. In my view, this is just as important as the bright spots in the background, which are distracting elements as well.

I do know what you mean Manfred. But I liked it because it had such a thin DOF. This was a capture when I had just acquired the lens and was more a test shot than a serious portrait attempt. Lots of things wrong with it with the bright area at the top and the OOF rear end on the top right.... you should have seen the original

Personal preference is a subjective decision- the eye is captured so well.

Nice picture for me if you eliminate the yellowish background and crop just above its rear eyebrow
