Hello, it's been awhile - Jack

    Geez,
I can't remember the last time I posted here or shot some photos. How is everyone doing these days? From all the posts, I can see pretty active! Website looks great BTW.
Some time ago I took on a job in organized labor and it's definitly not 9 to 5. That explains my absence from the site, anyway I've got a few pics I'll post, as always C&C is welcomed.

    Jack

Good to see you back. Hope you can spare more time in future. I suppose you could always do a photographic project on organised labour!

I have just opened an album (Piet's Bird Album), but haven't uploaded any images yet. What size for the images in an album do you guys recommend? 200x300 pix or is that to small?

    Hi Piet,

200 x 300 is definately waaaay too small. Personally I suggest something in the region of 600 to 700 for the longest dimension.

Welcome. Glad you like what you're seeing. Where are you? Best way of using the site is to pitch right in and start asking questions or posing questions. Hopefully, you've already seen that this is a site that's about supporting people.

    Donald,

Either is fine. I live in St. Croix, USVI. I've taken alot of underwater images with the canon G9/inon flash, mostly close up/macro. My wife and myself have a wonderful collection of orchids and I got the bug to photograph them. I'm enjoying the learning curve with the help of a friend on the mainland. I'm using a canon rebel at present and I'm pleased with the results so far but I know better equipment will help. For now I trying to get a good understanding of lighting, which seems easier to control than underwater. So I will be asking questions in the future. Thanks for the warm welome.

After a break with photography-still got my treasured Canon F-1 and lenses I'm back enjoying all the new aspects to it.Did'nt want to go back down the route of a bulky camera and lots of lenses so ended up buying a Canon G10 which I'm pleased with and take with me all the time.Using CS5 for the processing afterwards which is all new to me,was a kodachrome 25 and 64 user for many years,so this post processing is a new subject.I have to say its taking some understanding, bought myself recently a copy of the Adobe classroom in a book on CS5 and I'm also reading the online articles by Ron Bigelow but my poor little brain is suffering-did'nt know I had so much sawdust between my ears! I'm hopefully attaching a few recent photos, still struggling to get the compositions right, having to conciously think about each image at the scene.Having a play with Photomatix but I'm wary of using it too much, the limitations of the G10 mean I find I'm having to crop a lot when I get home.

I would call that a good start and the right approach. Welcome Neil,

As for the images, you might want to post them up in one of the other sections of the site (e.g. start a thread under, say, Nature & Architecture for images such as these. Alternatively, depending on the subject matter, you can post them into one of the existing, long-running threads such as Landscapes, which you'll find within the Nature & Architecure section. As you will see we don't have dozens of forums for every genre or sub-category of subject like some other sites.).

A lot of people might not come into this particular thread and would, therefore, miss your images.

    Hi folks,

i have just joined CiC. found the same on the net while generally ploughing around researching HDR. thats right my key interests in phtotgraphy mainly include HDR, Macro and Bokeh styles.

i have recently purchased my first SLR, a lovely Canon 500D. using the standard 18 55 lens (but i assure you, i feel the need for aperture already) as of now till i learn the basics.

well hope to have a pleasant learning experience here and learn a lot from the resident pros!

    wish me luck!! and cheers!!

I do. But would also remind you that the amount of 'luck' you have is directly correlated to the amount of learning you undertake and effort you put in to master what you have chosen to do.

I applaud you for taking this very sensible approach. Learning the basics is what it's about. I think too many people jump to learning point 5, before learning and understanding 1, 2, 3 & 4 first. So, do lots of things with your 18-55. Find out what it and you are capable of together. Start to identify what it is that really interests you (I am a good example - my intentions when I got back into photography have never been realised and my work has taken a completely different direction).

Edit - I would urge you read your User Manual in detail, keep it with you and refer to it always, until every action on your camera can be carried out automatically. Once you can hit every control you want without taking your eye away from the viewfinder, you are beginning to be in harmony with your camera.

And, it's good to have you as part of this forum. Welcome

    Hello
I have just joined, attracted by the great range of tutorials here, in particular congratulations on the ones on colour.
they are the only ones I have found that are not:
    a. ridiculously mathematical
    b. incomprehensible, or
    c. wrong.
I have been a photographer for a long time, but am fairly new to digital.
I hope to be fairly active here
