    Dear Donald and Colin,

Thanks so much for your warm welcome. In "real life", I'm pretty outgoing - well, I'm a friendly hermit. I have no idea why I'm more nervous posting this reply than I am singing in front of several hundred people. Well, I promise that I will get over it or just cope or something like that. At the moment, I'm reading and reading through the tutorials and previous discussions. I feel like I've struck a vein of gold. Thanks, guys!

This website is the most serious and sophisticated site on photograpy I've seen and I've got a lot to learn from it, especially if I receive critiques of the members of this forum when I post my photos. I live in Melbourne and enjoy taking the pictures of landscapes of Australia. Nice to have joined this site.

Sorry to see your beloved Cats didn't make it. I was counting on them beating the Pies. Now I only have one chance left - GO SAINTS.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

I was born in Murphysboro, IL, a small town in Southern Illinois about 90 miles south of St. Louis, MO and 8 miles from the Mississippi River, 45 miles from the Ohio River. Went to high school and joined the U. S. Navy. Spent 23 years traveling around the world. Served on several aircraft carriers, in various squadrons, became a Flight Engineer in 1965, did a tour in Vietnam in 1966, did some Admiral staff duty and retired from the USN in December 1978 and came to Northern Virginia, the Woodbridge area, about 25 miles south of Washington D.C., doing consultant work supporting the Department of Defense, and supporting the Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
    Currently Retired
I have always been interested in sports, photography, Amateur Radio (W4MGM), hunting, fishing, camping, computers and Geocaching with my Garmin Oregon 400t.
Took some photography courses at Northern Virginia College in the early 80s with a great professor who taught me a lot (forgot a lot also! (Grin). I kind of got out of photography for awhile except being the duty picture taker at holiday time, weddings, parties, birthdays, etc. In 2003 I got back into "Snapping."
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II, EOS 20D. Lens, a Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM, EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM with a 2x extension and a Super Wide angle EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM.
I also have a Canon Rebel, Canon F1 and AE1 with various lens and too many accessories (Grin). I like shooting candid shots, both color and BW of people, doing landscape, some macro work, and wild life. I have always love black and white photography over color. I’m located in a very good area to shoot just about any type of photography with all the available resources in this area, battlefield, rivers, forests, monuments, mountains, and people of just about all denominations (Grin). Have a Good Day, Jim - Virginia is for Lovers.
P.S. - Looking forward to joining your group.

Hi Jim, welcome to the forums! It's really great to see someone who's been a member for ~2.5 years (!) make their first post. Glad you've been with us for so long. With all those interests I think you'll fit right in. There's also quite a lot of monochrome/b&w enthusiasts here too. Take a look at some of the current competitions (and the past winners here). Best, Sean

    Well hi to all,

I just joined this site today and wanted to say hi.

I look forward to a great learning experience and solid critique.

I am relatively new to the hobby (2years) so much to learn. I am currently shooting a Canon 50D with fairly decent success.
Learned to love the hobby on a Canon 30D.
So to my inspiration I say this, there is not much I thank you for but my love of photography most certainly.
I have to give credit where credit is due.. So thanks Meg.

As it is getting a little late here on the West Coast, time to say good night to all.

So best regards, look forward to all your input.

    Ron....

Hi, my name is Mary, from the US. I'm a blogging friend of Katy, who encouraged me to join here. I've been into digital photography for about 4 years. I shoot a lot of nature macros and landscapes but I'm trying to get into portrait photography. I blog at:

I'm looking forward to learning from all the great tutorials and forum threads here.

Hooray! Mary is here!!! You guys need some womens' insight, here - I mean vision wise. =] She's fresh and unspoiled - goes right to my heart, anyway. Funnily, enough, she's the one who recommended this site to me for the tutorials. Well, we'll see what happens!

    Hi All

I love photography but not really had time to take it any further. A few months ago I signed up for an online photography course but finding it quite difficult! I've treated myself to a lovely Cannon 7D and now just have to get my head around how to use it.

Hi Karen. A warm welcome to CiC!

It's noticable how many people claim a shortage of time to do the things they want to do - that's modern life, I suppose. And you can spend a lot of time learning photography if you do it by yourself. If you are an absolute starter I'd try to keep going with some kind of class, but I'm not sure about the online method. Are there any photography courses run in your local area? That might be a much better option. This forum can give you a lot of help and guidance, but a course in tandem with that would be good. Have you looked at the photography tutorials here (on the top menu)? They are very good.

Just ask anything you need in a new thread, or post some of your images for comment/feedback.

hi Room, I'm Paul, 56 y., male, Belgium. Photography is one of my passions, and this forum seems perfect for me to meet likewise passionato's, and exchange views and info. I'm not a professional in photography, there's still much to be learned by me !! Looking forward to all that.

Hi Paul, and you are most welcome to CiC!

It's useful to put your location (Belgium) in your profile as it can be meaningful in a contextual way to anything you post. Just ask any new questions in a new thread, or perhaps post some of your images? We are very considerate here with new members. The first two days at least.

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

Hi everyone, I've been reading alot on this website and have been helped so much already. I'm new to photography, well, besides snapshots with point and shoots since I was a kid. I bought my first DSLR about 6 months ago, have been practicing everything from the ground up (camera raw, dabble in lightroom, photoshop intermediate level, and other stuff I can find on Google). I'm in college, and aiming towards something photography/digital film editing/graphic arts undergrad degree and am in a bunch of classes all the time.

My camera is the prosumer Canon D50, with the typical nifty-fifty lens and my original kit zoom. I've got an old Canon strobe (430EZ) that someone gave me, and have a growing "to buy" list.

Thanks for letting me ramble on!

    Eric

Hi Eric. Welcome to CiC. You might want to put your first name in your profile so it shows on your posts. It's friendlier that way. Ask any questions or post images in a new thread. Have a look at the FAQ's (top of page) or send a PM to Mods if you get stuck. Enjoy!

    Hi there,

joined this morning ( I think! ) intrigued by the PAD and encouraged by the other posters expressing a mixture of; what ?, how ? where and does it hurt..?
I live 30 miles west of London in the Thames valley. I know enough about photography to get by but that's it...so looking to learn and hopefully take more engaging shots.
Finally for us numpties (OK I may be the only one) would someone kindly post a PAD description and how to do it, step by step.....

Hi Peter, and welcome to CiC. The PAD is just another thread, in this case one for each day, and participants just post their shot for the day as in any other thread. When the time comes, they will be created by Colin (Admin). here's one we did earlier... Day 16: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

PS: It's Tuesday today. I think!
