Thanks, Rob. It was actually mentioned by one of the Photography course moderators in the OU forum. It's good to know that members here are gentle to new members.

    Hi
My name is Mike i found this site purely by chance... i have been taking photos for about 5 yrs now but only recently it has developed (sorry..) into more of a passion ! i offered to shoot a friends wedding and that became the turning point for me .
I work as a Despatch Rider in London and frequently take my trusty Canon 400D in with me . . the city presents some fantastic locations and challenges for those looking to experiment and improve having moved away from the "auto" setting and shooting in "RAW" all the time now.. i find that my creativity has increased and i am really enjoying using my camera
I recently got rid of the kit lense that came with the 400D and now have the lense that comes with the 550 and this is also on my list for purchase early next year keeping the 400 for a backup
More recently ive been getting into post processing using the software that came with my camera and i do intend to purchase photoshop or elements 9 very soon as i recognise the potential that this aspect of the digital age has to offer !!

I am looking to chat with and make new friends hopefully to meet up and share ideas techniques and generally chat about photography (all my mates just dont get it .. but they enjoy the final results though.. )

I live in the glorious Bedfordshire countryside on a farm !! so i do have the best of both worlds to choose from as far as subject matter goes i enjoy most aspects of photography landscapes . . people . . buildings . .action . . and i do wanna get into portraits

So that in a nutshell is . . . me look forward to chatting with you all . . if any of you are on Facebook then you can also find me there . . under Michael Reynolds

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Abhishek and I just joined this thread. I am planning to buy my first DSLR soon and therefore reading a lot about various possibilities and developing my technology understanding. I came across CIC and found it quite different from other forums, technological discussions here are quite appetizing ! I am loving the tutorials!

Thanks and happy to be here!

Re: Introduce Yourself & Welcome Other Members (2)

Hi all, I'm Adrian (known as Ady) and I've been interested in digital imaging since the late 80's when I started using a computer for image manipulation/creation and creating page layouts, from which I produced screened colour separations for a conventional four colour print process. I soon branched out to include the capture, repair and reprint of old photographs/documents in my repertoire and have been doing this for money on and off ever since. I have been fortunate enough to work on all sorts of interesting material from Victorian prints and glass plates to a collection of letters written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge to his brother in 1792.

When it comes to photography I used to play around with an old Zenit-E during my teenage years but when that gave up the ghost I fell back to using point and click. However a few years ago I picked up a Canon 350D just to whet my appetite and see if I fancied picking up the photography again in any serious fashion. The answer was a resounding yes and I now enjoy a Canon 7D with a handful of lenses (+ lights, softboxes, reflectors etc.). I have been lucky enough to make this lot pay for itself by shooting some product, a couple of events, some portraits and selling prints, though I wouldn't call myself a professional photographer as I have neither the skill nor the income to justify the title.

I particularly enjoy shooting landscape and motorsport for fun and have sold a few prints of both. Most of my landscape photography is taken while visiting friends and family in Cornwall, where I lived before moving to the Cambridge area. I am now starting to explore East Anglia so if you know of any interesting spots that you don't mind sharing I'd be very greatful. My passion for motorsport is centred on the British Touring Car Championship and supporting events, though I'm happy to watch anything with four wheels and an engine.

I have a web site that I use primarily for clients but I've put some holiday and Silverstone BTCC photos up if folks are interested:

    http://ashmoreimaging.com/landseasky
    http://ashmoreimaging.com/motorsport

Most of the shots were taken with the 7D, most of the landscape using a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM and most of the motorsport with a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM. I also use my Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM quite a bit as a general purpose walk-about lens.

I ended up here after running away from another group that was suffering from a distinct lack of friendliness and humour, having read just a few of the posts here it seems like a nice place to hang out. I'm looking forward to sharing some pictures, learning all I can and (if I'm up to it) helping out others in the forums.

Oh and it may have come to your attention that I can be a bit verbose, an over compensation for being a tad socially awkward (my partner says it’s part of what makes me ‘special’ ), so feel free to remind me to keep it short!

    Cheers, Ady

Hello, my name is Peter and I currently own a Canon 30d and various lens after moving up from a Canon300d a few years back.
I came upon this site a couple of years ago and have enjoyed reading what it has to offer for novices like myself.
I was born and raised in the UK and am now residing in the USA (long story) and I am retired.
With more time on my hands now (except when I'm honeydoing ha!) I can put what I learn from this site to good use,
unless I am out riding my motor bike, which is another hobby of mine.

Hello and welcome to CIC. The Canon 550D is a great place to start. Being in the Canon camp I don't really have any knowlege on the Sony lineup so I would be misleading you if I told you otherwise. IMO the Canon has a better lens lineup than Sony. I'm not really sure about the pros/cons about having the IS in the body. If you have a camera shop that has these cameras that you are thinking of purchasing I would suggest checking them out in person. Hold them in your hand and see what feels comfortable along with asking as many questions as possible so you can make a solid decision. Today's DSLR gear (no matter the brand) is an investment compared to a P&S and will/should last you for years to come.

    @ Peter

I too ride and I recently got a Kata 3N1-30 to fit a good amount of gear (fits my 50-500 mounted) to combined my two passions, riding & photography. Now I can go for a day ride on the bike (cheaper on gas) and have my backpack full of goodies for when something catches my eye.

    @ Ady

Impressive shots on your links. I checked them out on my iPhone but will look again on my PC when I get home. I'm sure they will look much better on my 30" gateway than on my iPhone lol.

LOL! You must have come to the right place here - we have verbosity by the bucketful (but I'm not going to say who) For serious serial offenders we have some special threads called 'In conversation with...' like this one...In conversation with... Peter Ryan where you can talk about yourself as much as you like.

You are most welcome here - possibly the best forum.... you know the rest. Your shots are impressive, especially the Cornwall set.

Welcome to CiC. I removed your technical question from your post otherwise it clogs up this introduction thread. Don't worry about it, it's not a problem. Can you start a new thread in this section https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/forums/forum10.htm called something like 'help choosing new camera' or whatever.

My apologies to you, I thought I had copied and saved the text you entered, but I seem to have lost it. Not a very good start is it?

    Hi Rob (Douglas),

many thanks for the comment, I hope they still look good on your 30" Gateway :-)

Had a look at you Flickr and web site, really like the aesthetic of your monochrome images, esp. the urban/industrial decay, and I think I've fallen in love with the Allard (J2X?) on your Flickr site!

    Cheers,
    Ady

Hello Rob, many thanks for the warm welcome.

Buckets full of verbosity. I like the imagery, though I'll try to keep to small buckets as much as possible

I love your landscapes, I've always been a sucker for a nice landscape and I've got some fond memories of holidays on the Gower. However I am most intrigued by the still life and kitchen stuff, great set of images. I hope to eventually develop such an eye for seeing the remarkable, odd, and beautiful in the everyday. I am very happy with some of my own landscape images but it's not difficult to make the Cornish coast look good!

I'm looking forward to entering some of the challenges, doing some tutorials and contributing to the forums, and maybe one day I'll even think about the 'In conversation with...'

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Thanks for the comments on my site & flick Ady. That Allard was all original. I was given under rope access to shoot it and others at the Philly auto show. Also got an invite back down to Philly to shoot at the museum where it's located. I should get some really great stuff there. Those urban shots were of an abandoned industrial complex in morganville NJ. I had to "find" a way it to shoot lol and yes, your shot looked awesome on the 30"

Hi everyone, my name is Margaret and I came across this site after recently deciding to take up photography. I have recently bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 camera and, to be honest, I didn't have a clue where to start. I searched for photography tutorials and basic information and this is one of the sites that came up. I have started to go through the tutorials on this great site and I am, at last, starting to understand some of the terminology used in photography. I joined the forum hoping to pick up some tips on how to take better photographs, and learn about the various techniques other forum users have used.

Hi everyone, my name is Edz delos Reyes I live in the Philippines I just started photography and really want to know more about techniques and styles.
Right now I'm interested in landscapes and flowers, I'm using Nikon D3000 with 18-55mm VR coz they say it is the most friendly user DSLR (I must say its true its easy to navigate and use for a beginner like me). I'm into mountaineering that's mostly the reasons for the landscapes. But i really like small things and details like flower parts.
    Nice to meet everyone!
