There's nothing wrong with going at it in AUTO mode. I tend to keep my camera steady at ISO 64-100 and concentrate on aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. I was at a Chinese exhibit this weekend and the dancers and martial artists were moving so fast that most of my images looked like ghosts. I didn't want to distract them with flash and tried to time their motions to capture a decent image. I find that putting the camera in Sports Mode just doesn't do the job, the shutter speed is often too long. On top of that, my position was between the dancers and the audience and quite a few shots were ruined because of heads popping into the frame.

Semi retired and desperately want to learn to take beautiful pics...I love breath taking photos.
I didn't ask advice on purchasing equipment but I know now should have.

It has a 27 mm wide angle lens and a 5x optical zoom. Its reduced from over £200 to £89. I just want to know if it will do. Id like to be able to print large magnified photos to frame and sell and im clueless about what pixels i need. Is this a good buy? Many thanks.
Hi Holly(?),
Unlikely, very, very unlikely!
Donald has sounded the warnings about just buying what appears to be a bargain - often it isn't, it's just 'they' shout louder and secondly it's usually reduced because it didn't sell well on merit alone - although there are (occasionally) exceptions to this 'rule'.
It isn't impossible to sell pictures taken using a decent compact or bridge camera, but it'll be harder and you'd need to be an exceptional photographer - but maybe you are.
Difficult to know what to advise, we could spend £5,000 of your money and get you well kitted out, but even that wouldn't guarantee success. Probably starting with a DSLR is overkill
You want to look for a camera with a good quality lens that allows both manual as well as Auto control of the settings (focus, shutter speed, iso and aperture) and also one that shoots something called RAW, not just jpg. I think something like a Canon G10 or G11 will do all that, but they're £350 odd.
Maybe someone else has some ideas, but this thread isn't the best place for them. Could you start a new thread in the Cameras forum and tell what you want to shoot and how much budget you have?

Hi Jo,
Yes, I could return with the quick quip; "you should have bought a Nikon", but we don't do that here (well, not often) ;)
Do 'join in the fun' and post some pictures for critique, or ask questions.

Good afternoon(at least where I am anyways :D ). New to the forum as well. Found it Googling for depth of field and how to compose it. I just picked up the new T2i with 18-55 and 55-250 lenses. Both are IS.
I'm hoping to learn how to shoot as well as a friend who really is self taught and an award winner. Maybe that's setting the bar a bit high, but one has to aspire to more right? Also really want to excel with my photo-editing.
The tutorials here are AWESOME, just wish there was printable version as I like to read away from my pc.
Anyways, that's all for now. Off to explore the world that is CiC.

Went through my profile and did just that. One question? Can/how does one create a signature? I'll be sure to upload a few pics in the next day or two as I look forward to the feedback for improving my skills.

Hi, I am Paul from Malaysia. Have been playing with DSLRs since 2004 and film since 1979, consider myself quite comfortable around cameras and post processing software but never really bothered to learn the science behind the techniques. Came across this site and have to say it's eye-opening.
Looking forward to no longer just doing but also understanding the how and why.
Cheers

Just select Forum Actions from menu above then 'edit profile'. On the left you should have 'edit signature'. Insert whatever text you like including any external links (to Flickr page etc) that you require. You only get 4 lines. Send me a PM if you get stuck.
