Hello Folks,
My name is John Rayner from sunny South Africa. I shoot with an Olympus E620 that I upgraded to from the E510. Kit lenses are 28-84mm and 80-300mm. (am aiming for the 140-600mm); I have a Metz 48AF-1 speedlight.
My main areas of interest are Architecture and Night photography, Abstracts and a little (pun !) Macro, tho' anything is fair game if it piques my interest.
I have been shooting since 1970, so I am long in the tooth and grey of hair but am still learning.

Hello, my name is Jim. I live in Bartlett, IL. I use Canon F1, T90 and Rebel XSi, and mainly shoot flowers and some landscape. I am interested in improving my technique and exploring new topics such as portraits (without all the expensive equipment). I gave myself an early Christmas gift of Photoshop 9, so I will be revisiting some of my previous photos and try some of the new features. If I get it right I will share with the forum?
Regards,
Jim

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi, I am a new beginner on taking photos. I am not going to be able to upload any at this time but if anyone has some helpful hints or tips on how to work a Sony A230 DSLR, please let me know. At this time I have only been using auto, and the photos are ok but not great. It did come with an 18 55 zoom lens, but that is all I have. :)Thanks for any advise you can give me. :)

Welcome, Jim. Glad to have you on board. Hope you enjoy your time at CiC.
As for developing knowledge and skills in portraiture, I would recommend that you go to the Advanced search tab at the top of the page and then in 'Tags' enter 'portraits'. In there, amongst other things, you will find the series of lessons tutorials that Colin (one of our very senior [not as in old, of course] members developed earlier this year. You'd probably pay $xxxx dollars for the same information if you went out trying to buy it. On CiC you get it for free.

Sayantan.
Hello and welcome.
I look forward to seeing what you produce with your 450D.
At some point have a look at the thread about our Google Map and go to the map to make your entry. It's good to see where everyone comes from.

Okay, but I don't think your name is really New Beginner. We like to use real names around here as, I hope you've seen, this is a forum where people do engage with each other rather than just impersonally exchange messages.
I also hope you find that CiC is place where you can grow your knowledge and skills on photography.

Hello from New York! You guys all seem super professional and established. That's super intimidating. :p
I'm a classical music composer: symphony, opera, etc. That's why it took me ten years to save up and acquired my first DSLR 5 weeks ago.
Rob: no, I haven't figured out the "name" thing. My first name is Jie. My real name is Wang Jie. I'm good at following instructions but for some reason, no luck on this one. Am I missing something?
Nice to meet you all~~
Jie

This is Gabby and liked your site while browsing the Net. I am an old man who recently found photography as a good hobby for me. I am located here in Chula Vista, Ca. for a few years then moved back to my home country the Philippines. I come from the highlands and I think our place can be a landscape photographer's venue. Maybe I will be able to learn about photography by joining this site. Thank you for being accepted and hopefully I will not be a disturbance when I start asking elementary questions about photography.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi, my name is Harold, from Little Rock, AR...southern USA. I am fairly new to digital photography, though I have had many years of experience in film photography. I am now only interested in shooting for my motorcycle riding group and for the family, but I still would like to be able to do good work.
My history in photography was mostly in motorcycle and auto racing work. I did work with a nearby drag racing facility, doing some work with the NHRA when they had events there, and also with local Moto-x racing for mostly amateur racers. I paid for my cameras by selling b/w shots done in a bathroom darkroom to the amateur racers. I have never been a pro photographer though I did earn some money from the work. I shunned wedding and formal photography out of a fear of screwing up one-time shots.
I have enjoyed the information that I have received here, and look forward to learning a lot, especially in the post-processing work. I am almost frightened of photoshop, but assume I will have to learn it, or another software to get really good shots.
Thanks.

Hallo,
I am Colin Perkins, and I have just finished the OU course on digital photography, though we have to wait until the end of March for the results.
In the meantime I feel I have learned a lot more about my camera and about editing pictures.
I have always been interested in photography and used to develop, enlarge etc at home in the blacked-out kitchen. It is good to be able too use a virtual darkroom now!
Happy Christmas to all!
Colin
