I think you've already worked out how CiC works, but just so you don't feel you've been ignored ............

If you haven't already done so, please be sure to read post #1 of this thread HERE which will help you get started. Also our Code of Conduct in the FAQ HERE

CiC is a resource strongly focused towards learning, no matter what your current level of knowledge, skills and experience. As well as these forums, where you can engage in discussion, ask questions and seek comment and criticism on your pictures, CiC has a comprehensive range of tutorials that, by common consent, are amongst the most sensible and straightforward that you can find anywhere. Remember to have a look on the tutorials and techniques pages which you can access from the menu bar.

And finally, the Mod team thought it might be a useful addition to CiC to have in-house access to some selected video tutorials. You can find them in the Community Lounge forum under 'Photography Video Tutorials'.

    Hello All,
My name is John Conti. I recieved a Dslr camera as a gift of sorts. My wife owns an advertising agency and as a Christmas/Work gift I now have a Nikon D90. Im excited to learn how to use it. I love looking at pictures and also love dreaming up ideas that I dont know how to capture just yet. This site is awesome. I actualy have been cruising around on here while not even having a real camera.(dsc-h10) I'm having a hard time wanting to go to work, sleep, feed my children, ect since the D90 has entered our home. Well, I have a thousand questions so, I shall return.

Hi my name is Lynne, I am English but live in southern Brittany. I am very new to photography and currently only have a 'point n' shoot' camera. I hoping to be able to get my first DSLR, perhaps a D3100, when the sales start in France! At the moment my interest is in land/sea scapes, although I am sure as I learn this will change and evolve.

This is one I took of the old port and marina near where I live. Beautiful morning in November.

Really glad to have found this forum and the tutorials, as I need all the help I can get!

Wishing everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello all, so glad to have found another photography forum to discuss and learn about this (a)vocation.

I have been a photographer since 1970 when I purchased my first SLR, a Petri FT. I added lenses; 35mm, 135mm, 400mm, 2X teleconverter and bellows for some versatility and mostly took snapshots while touring Europe with the US Navy. Later had to replace my Petri and obtained a Pentax K1000 and a 70-205 zoom. A few years ago made the switch to digital with a Pentax istDL with 18-55 f3.5-5.6, and 50-200 f4-5.6. Decided I wanted more pixels for larger pictures and more cropping range (if needed) and upgraded to Pentax K-x with 18-55 f3.5-5.6 and 55-300 f4-5.6 zooms.

I still have two each Petri and Pentax film cameras with the above mentioned lenses and they are in excellent working order. Although I have not used them for some time, I feel an attachment to them and appreciate the service they gave me over the years so hold on to them for sentimental reason.

Currently work for a yearbook photography and publishing company during the school year and relax during the off time.

I look forward to seeing the photos of others and learning from examples and comments. Hopefully I can contribute some assistance to others, even if it may be limited.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hello everyone,

I decided that since CiC has been a constant companion learning about digital photography, it ought to make a good forum to join now that I'm getting serious about improving my own skills and knowledge.

A bit about me then: I'm called Andy, 28 years old, and have been interested in photography for roughly 3 years, and until now I've been using a Fuji S6900 bridge camera. I'm currently deciding on what lens(s) I'll want to go with for my choice of upgrade to DSLR, which will be the Canon 550D. I figured that now I'm using manual mode more often than not, it was about time to upgrade (plus, I'm itching to see the image quality improvements by using better glass!).

In photography, I'm mainly motivated by Landscape work, both natural and city. This is what I want to focus on in the immediate future, but by no means exclusively.

I'm from Cardiff in Wales if there are any Welsh or British folk out there, and my other interests are music and martial arts taichi.

    cheers, Andy

I am Robin from the South of the South in New Zealand
Waimatuku is the name of the place I live on a small farm we have leased out. I/We have decided that working for a living is past its use by date so we gave up and decided to do some serious traveling, both here and overseas. So far we have achieved 3 months in N.Z. well a bit more, and 3 months in Europe.

I decided to get a bit more serious about photography after I "re-acquired" a Nikon D70s with 19700 shutter clicks on it. Now I find it is way to old and not up to the new standard of a D300s or similar!!

My collection of lenses, which are cheapies, some of which came with the camera, Nikon AFS Nikkor 18-70 1:3.5-4. G ED DX SWM, Sigma 28-200 1:3.5-5.6, Nikon 70--300 1:4-5.6 G, Nikon 75-240 1:4.5-5.6 D, Nikon 50mm 1:1.8 AIS E, I guess some readers will know what the numbers all mean! I barely do.

I didn't know what DOF was until I read it on here. I was hunting around using google to find out why F stops let in more light if you use the lower numbers compared with higher numbers when I found this forum/site. So you can see I am a newbie!.

I do not know what my great photography passion might be but my hobbies go in bursts. Some have been: Building computers, setting up satelite dishes on motecks, (we get more channels than most locals and overseas ones they can't get!), tuning car ECUs, just Saab 9000 NG900, OG93 at this stage, and now a bit of photography, oh and teaching myself how to be a Barista! So much so that I bought 2 espresso machines one for the house and one for the campervan. When we go "camping" we must have an expresso machine to go with the electric blanket and satelite TV. Cars are a bit of a passion too, we have about 8 of them, nothing special, Fiat Unos, Saabs. My 92 C900 vert is a bit of a mid life statement!

So far I have experimented with landscape, macro, panning on race cars, who knows what will happen!

    Hey folks

I've been a casual photographer for a while and am just starting to understand concepts like Depth of Focus and the like versus selecting that "auto" green box or a mode and then go. I have a Rebel Digital EOS from about 5-7 years ago with the non IS EFS 18-55. I'll be trolling these forums for suggestions on the Canon EOS 7d vs the 60d and just how much difference a f2.8 vs f4.0 lens will get me. I primarily take scenery/landscapes and like to take a panoramic picture of several shots stitched together. Ultra wides seem to get it all but it's reaaaallly tiny. Inside I'll be likely photographing pets that won't slow down or sit just right in the light.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi Ken,

    I copied the original post in full and renamed it here;
Canon 7D, or 60D, that is the question, and which lens? as you get better (and quicker) feedback there, so I removed a fair bit of the questions above from this intro thread.

As a Nikon man myself, that's about as much help as I can be

Welcome to the CiC forums from ...
