Welcome to CiC. I have to confess to not knowing where Shawforth is. You can edit your profile and put in some more info to help idiots like me!
Congratulation on the 500D. And you're at exactly the same spot on the learning curve as everyone else who just got their first DSLR. For me, the secret is spend lots and lots of time with it and get to know it inside-out. Once you can operate all the buttons and dials automatically without even needing to look at the camera, you'll be getting their. And get out and shoot, shoot and shoot. The more practice the better.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
What a great site! I am really excited to have found it, I've already read two articles discussing techniques I want to try out. Currently I'm shooting with a Dimage A2, which I hope to upgrade to a Panny-GH2 shortly. I do a lot of marine photography since I spend nearly all my vacation time on a boat and I am very active in a New England yacht club. For the past two years I have been perfecting my printing skills, a step that has taken me to a whole new level of photography. Results so far? Pretty good, I think. But photography is a hobby that always allows you to grow and learn new things. I'm looking forward to reading more of the articles, trying out some of the techniques and discussing them in this forum.

Thank you, Homer. And you're very welcome .
It sounds like you've already found you're way around the site, so no need for the lengthy welcome message about where to go and what to see. The only places I'd specifically point you towards for information are the thread on posting images into messages on the site (here) and our Code of Conduct in the FAQ pages (here).
And let's get the marine pictures rolling in!

Hi, my name's Paul. The bambleweeney nick comes from something that got lodged in my head from reading The Hitchhikers Guide many years ago (maybe one day something actually useful might get lodged in there). I'm English but I've been living in France for the past four years or so and recently settled in the middle of Burgundy, a bit of a challenge for a landscape photographer but on the plus side the wine is plentiful and cheap.
Been browsing this site on and off for a few years and always found it interesting and informative.
Mostly use a Nikon D300s and occasionally my (t)rusty Mamiya 645, I also do all my own printing and framing and exhibit fairly regularly here in France.
Website finally on line and almost complete after an embarrassingly long time learning PHP, Javascript, CSS and then abandoning them for something entirely different.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello,
My name is Becky and I am located in Colorado.
I've in the last few years started getting braver and actually taking my camera off of the "auto" settings. Very intimidating i can tell you that !! Enrolled in some classes and now having a great time with some hit or miss shooting, but getting better.
I shoot with a Canon 40D and a variety of lenses and such.
My main focus at the moment is dog show photography. This includes candid, planned shoots, and lots of action. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone so started some portrait and landscape, as well as "win photos" for the dogs shows.
I've slowly been adding to my equipment to accomplish all of this and it's been a slow process but a fun one. Someday i'll get brave and post some of my favorite shots.
Another subject i love is landscapes. Living in Colorado and owning a 77 FJ40 Land Cruiser we do some serious off roading adventures. The sights and scenes are absolutely amazing and opens up a whole new world.
Anyway..thanks for having this forum. I go thru your website all the time for help and information.
