Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello all!
My name is Clair, and I live in Pocatello, Idaho. I have been using a Canon S1IS camera until Christmas of 2009, when my oldest son gave me his Rebel XT. I have been trying not to use the auto settings as much as I used to. I have the kit lens (15-55) a "nifty fifty" and recently purchased a 55-250IS lens. I enjoy photography, and am hoping to learn from this site as well as others I have found on the internet.

Hi Clair,
With a member name like that I guess you'll be improvising a lot, unless you're not alluding to the old TV show :o
I bet you'll learn more here than all the other forums put together, especialy if you ask questions and post images for critique :)
Well, that's given us something to live up to, hasn't it?
What sort of things do you shoot Clair?

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello. I just joined today and have posted information in my bio section. I'll repeat it here for the benefit of the Welcome Page. I retired 09.01.10, after nearly 40 years in college and university administration and foundation administration. I have served as president of a college in Montana for 11 years and was hired to establish a charitable education foundation in Washington DC where I worked for the past 10 years. I have been taking photos on and off most of my life, but with very little care for improvement. I have never taken a class or had any formal training. My favorite film camera is my Mamiya 7. Since the digital age began, I have had several Nikons and have bough several very nice lenses. When I retired, my Board of Directors gave me a Nikon D3X with a 24-70 mm 2.8 lens. Now I have the time and interest to learn how to use them. I will try to post a photo or two, but I first have to figure out how to do that. I have read the instructions, but following them is an entirely different challenge. I look forward to being a part of this community. Matt
PS: I think I have figured out how to attach a photo. I'm crawling after my granddaughter.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
I tried several times to attach a photo. Here's another try.
(Dave, If I have figured this incorrectly, let me know, please. Thanks.)
I get the success sign, then right click below IMG etc, but nothing happens. I am using a MacBookPro. Thanks. Matt

Hello everyone!
I'm pretty new to the world of digital photography and this place looks fantastic for getting suggestions and support. I've tried an study at home course but to be honest have found it really wishy-washy in the info it gives you, and having little support from other students made it a isolating experience.
I have decided that lots of reading around the subject online and in mags and books, and most importantly lots and lots of practice will work better for me. I bought a Canon 500d last year and have so far just been experimenting with taking photos of my kids, who really inspired me to take my interest in photography further. I hope someone out there might be able to give some advice on kit, and how to achieve a decent image, and help me become a better photographer!!!
Any advice on a good tripod would be grately appreciated, and also any good sources of info for learning...thanks!!

Julie
I think you will find this an excellent place for suggestions and support, but also for learning. I don't know if you've looked at the Tutorial and techniques sections of the site. If not, I would strongly recommend them. Obviously I don't know where you rate yourself in terms of knowledge, but if you consider yourself still needing to understand things like exposure and the relationships between shutter, aperture and ISO, or if you're needing help to think about things like lighting and/or composition, then these are the sorts of subjects covered in a way that is very accessible. By common consent, the tutorials on CiC are amongst the most helpful that you'll find anywhere online.
There are lots of people on this forum who are more than willing to share their knowledge and experience. That is very much what CiC is about. The best place to start is by you asking questions. As you have done above. But take that questions and post it up in the, say, the Cameras and Equipment forum where it's more likely to get picked up. But remember to say what you would want to do with a good tripod. And then you'll get better advice.

Hi Matt,
No, unfortunately that didn't work, mainly (I think) because I think you had not seen where the cursor was and when you started typing again, it corrupted the url/link.
I tried to piece things together, but with no luck I'm afraid.
Have another go in the image posting thread itself - use the "+ Reply to Thread" button. I recommend the post with pictures for guidance, just be careful where the cursor is in the post before you paste, make sure it is some where clear like on a new line.
Good luck, oh, and welcome to the CiC forums from ...

Hi Julie,
I cannot over-emphasis how true Donald's words are; stick around here, ask questions, you'll be amazed at the progress you'll make :)
Another good tip for learning about stuff (here in the forums) via past threads on specific topics is to click the View Tag Cloud button below, then look up say, Tripods there.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi Everyone,
My name is Eon and I live in Suffolk. I have always been inspired by great photography. For some reason I have never had a digital camera. I just used my mobile phone for snapshots. Some months ago I started reading up on the principals of photography in various magazines and youtube clips while saving for my first camera. Three weeks back I took delivery of my new Nikon D7000, and I love it. I have gone in at the deep end by shooting in manual mode and am having fun, but...... I have a lot to learn.
A friend told me about this site and on discovering the forum I have been very inspired by the member posts and their photography. I have seen some amazing work here and know that by joining I will learn a lot.
Right... I'm off for a look around.
Regards
Eon..

A very warm welcome, Eon.
So far as having gone in at the deep end and straight to Manual shooting - well done. That was a bit of advice I got on here when I first joined and I'm so glad that I did. I have learned so much, so much more quickly and comprehensively (I think) than I otherwise would. So, stick with it, even when it feels it would make life easier just to flick the switch onto another mode.
I'm glad that you've found CiC to be an inspiring online resource. The aim is certainly to encourage and support everyone to reach their potential and to achieve their goals in photography. There are lots of very knowledgeable and experienced people on here only too willing to share that with others.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hey there,
Just doing my introductory. I'm Shantel from the Caribbean; Originally from Trinidad but recently relocated to Antigua. I've always had an interest with photography and now that I have more time on my hands I thought I'm going to get serious at it...or at least try to.
My cam is a Powershot SD750 and I've had it for at least 3 years now. Unfortunately, I am only now discovering the beauty within. I'll like to upgrade, but I think I should get my footing first.
Look forward to meet some of you awesome photographers and hope to learn a thing or two.
Cheers
