Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hey everyone,
My name is Rob and I am new to CiC. I have read CiC's tutorials for years and recommended them to as many people as I can. I finally registered after I began reading the School of Portraiture series (very helpful, not just for portraits!).
Most of my photography is automotive related. I'm a car nut. It's actually the spark that got me into photography.
Here's typical pic of mine:

At the insistance of my wife, I have been doing nature and wildlife photography as well. I'm glad she suggested it too! I'd like to move into doing more with people, and the tutorials I have read have really inspired me to try it.
And here's a link to more pics I have taken:

You're very welcome to CiC.
Nice pic.
I know what you mean about School of Portraiture series. It's hugely valuable and whilst you'd pay a lot of money for that sort pof advice and guidance in many places, on here Colin just rattles it off in his spare time and posts it up!
But that's what CiC is all about - helping other people with their learning and development.
So, please do join in.

Hi Fellow photography people.
My name is Wendy and I am brand new to this site. I live in Southern Oregon where the landscape view is amazing and I spent many hours teaching myself photography. I hope to take classes one day but for now I am completely enjoying capturing the beauty of my area.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi everyone. My name is John, I am a retired Engineer/Quality Assurance Manager, well into my seventies:), and living in Canterbury UK.
I have always had an interest in photography, nothing too serious, but usually carry a camera. Time was when I had a small darkroom and spent many happy hours there trying to match the masters of the art......never succeeded:)
The onset of glaucoma and the serious reduction of sight in one eye led to me selling all of my, then rollfilm, cameras and equipment. A few years ago my interest was rekindled and I went through several compact and bridge cameras but my desire to get back to SLR was satisfied last year when I bought a Nikon D5000 with the kit lens plus a 55 - 200 which I thought would meet all my needs in my late years. I have just added a 35mm f1.8 because I was attracted to a 'back to basics' approach and going out with just the one lens....yet to see how that works out:)
I photograph anything and everything, particularly like mono, and would like to get more opportunity for some wildlife photos....
Just as a sample I have added a mono of some trees in a local forestry commission woodland taken last autumn.

You ARE lucky Wendy! I am very fond of the Bandon area but I want to get out and explore your state more when I can find the time. I am looking forward to seeing some of your work!

John,
Fantastic! How great is it you have found your way back to photography?! I would expect you will find the joys photography afforded you in the past here in the digital world. I am finding myself partial to mono, so I look forward to seeing your work. Welcome!
Mike

Hi everyone, I'm very new to the world of digital photography and thought it would be nice to join and learn a few things, I'm immensely facinated with my new DSLR camera (only owned a point and shoot camera for my entire adult life :D) so I'd love to be able to take advantage of all its features and what better way to learn to make and create amazing photographs than to listen and get insight from people who know more about it than I do :)

hi i m Manish Mehta from India. I m into photography since 20 years. I am a industrial photographer but lately i m inclined towards fineart photography and digital paintings.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello, Manish. You are very welcome.
I'm very interested to hear more about your work as an industrial photographer and, if possible to see some of those images.
You'll find plenty of opportunity on CiC to share your knowledge and experience and to engage in good discussion with others.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi, I'm Ati, real name Chris Bamford, been around for a couple of months so about time I introduced myself. I live in France and have done for donkey's years, in the Paris area, which is rich in photographic potential, so I'm lucky.
I'm incredibly impressed by the quality of the photos in the comps. and mini-comps, and by the level of commitment in time and attention that that quality represents. I guess that makes me a snapshotter, who hopes through this and other reading to improve his snapshots so that they end up by delighting more than boring.
Best regards to all, and huge thanks to the organisers of this site, Ati.

Thanks! I recently got a Canon EOS 60D with its accompanying kit an 18-135mm IS lens (as a gift) is it a good camera? I'm a real newbie when it comes to digital SLRs and digital photography in general but I am really interested in learning more about it... and I do hope to post and take part in the discussions, hope everyone can be patient with me as I am still learning the ropes and hope to post a couple of images I've taken so I can learn and improve. :)

The one thing I think I can guarantee on here is patience. This is a site where people are dedicated to supporting others in their learning. You will not get people telling you that you are 'wrong' or that you 'don't know enough', as I believe happens in other places. Please remember, that the only daft question is the one you don't ask.
As for the Canon 60D - Yes it is a very, very good camera. You've got yourself a serious piece of kit there. The task now, I would suggest, is learning about it and using it until the use of all the buttons and dials becomes automatic and second nature to you. Once you're totally comfortable with using the camera, then you can devote all your energies to the creative aspects of exposure, composition, etc.
And one other suggestion - Don't be tempted, if you are, to leave the camera in auto mode. Get into Av, Tv and Manual Modes and then you'll really start learning the power of the camera.

Hi My name is Bill Green and I live in central New Hampshire USA
I am new to CiC and am just starting to view the forums etc.
Retired after 40+ years in IT as a large computer operator, a programmer analyst, team leader, programmer, manager, etc.
upon retirement started picking up photography as my hobby, would like to professionally do some photography some day.
I currently use a Nikon D7000 D-SLR, Photoshop CS5, Nikon View-NX2, Windows PC's, IPAD for presentation and image review while away from PC's.
Subscribe to several Stock agencies and am utilizing them to get photo critiques and more knowledge on good photography. Do have a few images on line at several Stock agencies, but still need a lot of knowledge and practice to become proficient with the camera.
I tend to like landscapes the most, but also capture animals when they appear or we can find them.

Bill - It's great to have you on here. You're very welcome.
I suspect all that computer experience might be able to be put to good use in helping ansewr some of the questions that get posted up on here.
As I hope you quickly find, CiC is very much about supporting colleagues and sharing knowledge and experience. It's one of the great plus points of this forum that nobody is ever made to feel that they don't belong.
So, please do join in and i look froward to seeing your images.

Then I'm really glad I joined, been looking for a place where I can learn and pick peoples brains about digital photography and yes, the few shots I've taken have always been in auto mode, and I do find some of the modes present in my new camera a little intimidating but I also I felt that shooting in just auto mode is doing my new DSLR camera a great disservice that's one of the reasons I joined because I wanted to fully use the features of my new camera and to learn what modes or settings are best when taking portrait or landscapes and the like :)
quick question if I may trouble you, a friend of mine who I think has more experience in photography told me that I should just sell my camera and get a Nikon D3100 w/c she says is better than the one given to me as a gift, is she right in her suggestion? she also suggested I get camera filters and a hood to protect my camera lens, how do I know what filters to get for my camera lens? and do I need to have camera filters for my lens?
thanks again for the warm welcome and I hope to be able to contribute in any shape or form to the community. :D
