I wish my youth was just 25 years ago!!

Hello Patrik and welcome to CiC.

One of the very good things about this forum, is that people who are new to photography can engage in discussions, ask questions and post images free from any concern that their contributions are going to be belittled, ridiculed or otherwise criticised in unconstructive manner. It's one of the great strengths of the forum.

By the way, you don't tell us where you are.

Jim - There are quite a lot of us who've been in that situation - returning to photography after a long time away. So, welcome to the club.

I hope you enjoy being part of this forum and that you find it is helpful in terms of you learning and developing your skills.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. I would like to change my name around to be more accurate, ie. to be Trevor Matlow.
I live in Altrincham, Cheshire, and being retired spend a fair amount of time travelling,
and quite often have troubles printing due to colour casts and things that get in the way.

    Hi Everyone,
As a newbie I am delighted to have found this excellent site. I am a enthusiast who is hungry to learn the ropes. The tutorials are amazing. Thanks so much for the hard work. I am impressed and grateful.

In the early 1960's I used a Speed Graphic for a short time while in the U.S. Navy. Very interesting piece of equipment, especially so since I had zero training!

I used point and shot cameras until December 2009. At that time I made the quantum leap and purchased a Canon 50D. Wow! I am amazed. Two years later I am still learning. I expect to increase my skills by parking at Cambridgeincolor for extended periods of time.

Looking forward to getting acquainted. Freeprize AKA Gerald Ward

Hi Ivy Jane here, just got back into photography, after dabbling with it in my teens, the site so far has been very useful. I've been taking pics of stars and their tracks.

Hello from sunny cold for us Vero Beach Florida My name is Ken, I have been a photographer since 7 started with a kodak box instamatic. When dad decided I was serious he passed on one of his NikonF's which I still have. I have been a raving Nikonian ever since. I shoot mostly digital with my D-100 or the pocket rocket a coolpix L-22. When the film bug bites it usually black and white in the F, FE, n-75, N-90 or N-90's. I have a serious case of NAS especially at KEH.com my latest acquisition came yesterday, the n-90s for $10.00 heck you cant get a pizza for that price. Anyway, im a photography as art kind of guy. I shoot weird subject matter things people see but never notice such as potholes, cracks in the sidewalk, patterns in buildings etc. Have to admit Im a little nervous cause this is the exact same style of website that popphoto.com has and it ruined the website to the point its a ghosttown over there.

If you post some of your images into the 'Nature & Architecture' or 'People & Pets' sections then you will, I'm sure, get some helpful comments and criticism.

With your Powershot you can still learn and apply many of the skills of photography. I hope, therefore, that being part of CiC helps you develop that knowledge.

    Ivy Jane

If you huint around, you'll find some spectacular star trail shots on here. And remember, there will always be someone around who will be happy to give advice and support that, if you wish, will help you with your learning. I think/hope you will find ciC a friendly online community where the attention is very much on helping people develop their knowledge and skills. I look forward to seeing you posting some of your images.

Not sure what that other site is/was, but I wasn't clear what the issue is about in terms of the style of website ruining the site. I think CiC is on a pretty solid foundation.

To which you are, of course, very welcome. You will have seen that this is a very much a learning forum with the emphasis being on those of us who are able, to share knowledge and experience with others so that we all can learn and develop.

Hello. My name is Dan and I have joined CiC in hopes of learning the art of photography. I am retiring in 5 years so a hobby is in my future. So far all I have used are point and shoot cameras. My wonderful wife bought me a bridge camera for Christmas so I will begin experimenting. Any help or advice from my fellow CiC members would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Dan - As I hope you've already seen, CiC is very much a place for learning. So, you are very welcome.

I'd suggest a two-stage strategy for getting a feel of what the learning is all going to be about.

Firstly, peruse the tutorials that are part of the site along with this forum. Don't get overwhelmed by what you read in there. Content yourself with the knowledge that by taking it a step at a time, you will start to feel comfortable with the terminology and the concepts discussed discussed in there. Click on the 'Photography Tutorials' tab above and then select 'show all tutorials. The you can browse through the contents at your own pace.

Secondly, if you don't feel ready to jump into discussion on the forum yet, then, again, follow the threads as the emerge and read what is being discussed. Some of these dsicussiosn will be highly informative. And whenever you spot a topic or an issue that puzzles you, then just post up a question and ask people to help you understand what's being discussed.

And, thirdly ............ enjoy it. It's easy to feel that you'll never master all that, it seems, needs to be known. You will. It's all about having that hunger to learn. And I hope you find this forum a good place in which to do that.

And, by the way, so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile and enter your proper name under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi I am Kim Parks and I have been shooting photography for over 10 years. I am currently shooting with a Nikon D3100 and a Canon Digital Rebel XT. I love both of my cameras and have their quirks. Indoor pics I really love the Nikon and the outdoor either works but the Nikon sure is a lot lighter.

Marc - Hello and welcome. So far as I can recall, I don't think there are any current active members from Alabama (someone will now come in to correct me!).

I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and that in the spirit of learning that is the basis of CiC, that 30 years worth of knowledge and experience will be shared with others in discussion so that they might learn and develop.

Good to have you on board.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi my name is Carrie, im a self taught photographer, i have never done a course on photography as i have two kiddies that need my attention, i learn as i go and try and read up on all tips and tutorials from other photographers. But i find it hard to understand most of it eg how the camera works, i have some good photos, but i think im fulking it, i adjust my settings and take a practice shot, then adjust the settings again to get the right look im after, but then sometimes i can't get the settings right. I have read most of your tips on here and they are awesome, i have never found a website that puts all the right words for half new photographers , but i have now. The question now on my mind is how do i understand it in my way of learning. I hope you can help me out. I will put up my photos and see what you think of them and me to ask how do i learn this? or that?. Thank you so much and i hope when i go out and do more weddings etc i will be so much more confident on the settings: Camera exposure: Aperture, ISO, and shutter speed and how to put them all together easier and faster, and many more questions.

    Carrie

Someone with a foot in both camps. Not so common, but good to hear.

Welcome Kim. Great to have you here.

As I hope you've already seen. CiC is very much about encouraging and supporting others with their learning, as well as constructively discussing various photographic issues and ideas ... and having some fun in informal competitions, etc.

I look forward to you taking part.
